Importing photos

Whenever I want to import photos I have to click through all the files to find my "pictures" file, starting at the top (Macintosh HD). That started a few months ago. Before I never had to to this. The pictures folder was always right there. What can I do to keep this folder open all the time?

Do you mean the Source location on the left, or the Destination location on the right?

I’m talking about the destination on the right at the bottom where they
should be stored.

Its sticky for me "most" of the time but the easy fix is to click the little up/down arrows next to the drive icon in the upper right corner for a list of recent locations.
