Lightroom 10.2 Mac - Smart Previews appearing after import without check box being ticked

Having issues with unwanted Smart Previews. We never use smart previews. 


TIMELINE

Historically: Never build Smart previews

  1. Recently Updgraded to Lightroom 10 and subsequently 10.2 (mac)
  2. Shortly after, LR started to slow down 
  3. Shortly after, MAC OS suggesting HDD was nearly full
  4. Checked storage through System Prefs
  5. Found 135GB "v10 Smart Previews dot lrdata"
  6. Yesterday, used "Library>Previews>Discard Smart Previews" to regain space
  7. Today, Imported 144 pictures (Build Smart Previews was NOT CHECKED)
  8. "Smart Previews lrdata" grew with 144 smart previews
  9. Deleted using "Discard Smart Previews"

 

Could they have been been build during the upgrade to V10 when LR built the new compatible catalogue?

 

Anyone else seeing this?

There haven't been any other reports about this, so it seems unlikely. Some troubleshooting steps"

 

1. Do you sync your catalog with LR Cloud?  That can sometimes create smart previews.

 

2. Try resetting LR's preferences: 
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.
