I went ahead and made an arrangement with someone through Craigslist for a brand new copy of Lightroom 5. I received it and it looks like it was a bundled copy sold with printers and whatnot.
I installed it and used the serial number. But when I tried to register the product, it would try and then state it was having trouble reaching the servers. I also tried to check the serial number on the Adobe site in two different areas, both of which did not work and could not validate the serial number.
The most obvious answer is that it's fake. It is version 5.2, the inside of the DVD case has a "patent pending" on the actual case, and compared to one other picture I found of the same type of bundled copy, the DVD case is completely different on the inside. On top of that, the plastic wrap states, "Adobe Photoshop Lightroo...op CS5 Training on 5 DVDs". You can find this product on Amazon, which is only the training DVDs and does not come with a bundled copy of Lightroom...
My question is will the serial number still validate since it would be old at this point? Also, what other reasons could it be invalid? Any chance I can get someone from Adobe to verify the serial number?

As far as I remember, there is no serial number validation in Lightroom 5 that requires LR to contact a server somewhere, it is all done locally through some built-in serial number checking in the program itself. So, if it doesn't like your serial number, then that's the end of the story, it won't work with that serial number.

Thanks for the reply. The serial number does validate so that it can install, but the issue is of registration which is reaching out to a server.
I want the product registered, but it is functioning fine without registration.

Registering Adobe software and ACTIVATING it are two completely different things,
If after entering the serial number the program functions properly then it is Activated and you can use it as long as you like.
Registering is letting Adobe know you have a copy of LR 5. There is no good reason to register that software. In fact the servers have been taken down for all Perpetual licensed software. There is no warranty on them anymore and support of any kind for them (other than posting a question on these forums.
So don't worry about it.

Hi,
The error code you highlights 2 possibilities :
1.The serial number itself is invalid and hence it rules out any further possibility of solution. You may try light room cloud version.
2. The error you mentioned " unable to reach Adobe Servers" is related to existence of virtual internet connections especially on windows machine and if thats the case, you may try below mentioned steps :
1. got to control panel
2. go to Network and sharing Center
3. click on change adapter settings
4. look for Microsoft virtual network icon and disable it.
If Situation second is right and applies to this situation, it should fix the issue.

If, when you entered the serial number, it was accepted and you are now able to use Lightroom, I wouldn't worry about it. Adobe no longer supports Lightroom 5. It is outdated software that has long been replaced. As long as the software works, it seems to me that you have nothing to worry about.

You might try (be ready to be disapointed) going to Adobe.com, sign in (if you do this while being signed into this forum, you will find that you are already signed in), Click on that icon that looks like a circle with a section carved out (near upper right). Click on adobe.accont (or manage adobe account, depending on where your at) click on Register a Product, and see if Adobe will pay any atention to an old old very old product.
