Lightroom 6.0 is shutting down when I try to import pictures. Upgrade installer also quits.

This is the first trouble I have encountered with LR 6.0.   Lightroom 6.0 is shutting down when I try to import pictures. I  tried to upgrade but the installer also quits.  I installed LR 6 from a disk years ago and all photos are on my computer.  If I uninstall LR will those pictures be lost?
