Well the problem is not your version of Lightroom as the Sony a6000 has been supported since Lr v5.4

Does the Destination folder have full Read/Write permissions?

Please add the following to your question:
Operating system and Version number
The full text of any Error Message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
Post a Screen-clip of the open Destination panel

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.

No recent upgrades, aside from usual MS fixes
There is no no destination folder, as far as I understand. I am tryning to import files into my LR catalog, and I get a message "Previews unavailable for this file" and a blank" ARW files previously imported are OK. Changing cataologs has no effect.

If I try to open the file in PSE12 I get a different response: "Could not complete your request because the file (from an a6000 camera) appears to be froma camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information"  Camera raw has been updated.

If I try to open a6000 or a6400 files with Adobe DNG converter, it works just fine. That is my default - first convert all of my ARW files with the DNG converter then load into LR

"stopped loading"

Exactly what Lightroom step is "loading"? Exactly what steps do you follow? Please describe in detail. How far do you get? What happens? If there is an error message, please quote the exact complete unedited word-for-word error message.

By loading I mean importing a record of image files into my catalog. When I import image files I go throught the standard "Import" sequence of identfying the folder with files of interest and checking those files I want to import. Previously not imported ARW files are identified as not having readable jpeg images and they will not respond to a request to import - for LR.
For PSE12, a message says these files cannot be read by Camera Raw.

Let's try and sort it out!

Your Lightroom is Version 6.14 (the standalone version that is now replaced by Lightroom-Classic v9.2.1)

1) Your a6000 camera requires a minimum Lightroom version of 5.4

ScreenShot165.jpg

Lightroom 6.14 can and will import all ARW files from this camera. If it is not importing for you then there is something else wrong in your Import settings. (eg. problems with the Destination folder)

(Note: You do NOT Import photos "into Lightroom". You Import them to a Destination folder AND index them in the Catalog. You MUST have a folder for the files to be placed in. )

2) Your a6400 camera requires Lightroom-Classic Version 8.2.1 as a minimum.

ScreenShot168.jpg

So you Lr v6.14 will NOT read or import ARW files from this camera.

Your only alternative is to convert them to DNG as you state you have done.

3) Your Photoshop Elements v12 installs with ACR v8.1 and this can be upgraded to v8.5 (at the most!)

ScreenShot169.jpg

So- Photoshop Elements can render the a6000 files, but NOT the a6400 files which require ACR v11.2.1- and you CANNOT update this for PsE.

Finally- you are limited by the Version of Lightroom. DNG is your only recourse, unless-

You could subscribe to the Photography 20Gb Plan for US$9.99/month and have the very latest versions of Lightroom-Classic, Photoshop (the 'full' version), all Lightroom-mobile Apps, a Portfolio website, etc. (incredible value IMO).

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.

You misunderstand what I was saying. I import my image files into a "destination folder" from my SD card as a seperate operation. The "destination folder" is a standard folder on my computer, no different than the hundreds of other image folders I have. It might have dng and jpeg files stored in the same folder. LR has no difficult in recognizing and cataloging those files - only problems with newer ARW files, ones not previously cataloged. It has problems with EVERY "destination folder" that has a new ARW file in it, no matter what camera it came from. There is a problem the Adobe applications, not all of these folders.  The Camera Raw function seems to be the common thread to me. I seem to recall updating it recently.

But why does Adobe DNG Converter process these files, in these folders, with no difficulties, and my other applications fail to process them?? Why can MS Photos open these ARW images? Why Corel PSP?  Why does Adobe make it more difficult to nmake use of these images than MS or Corel ( a rhetoric question)?

I understand (all too well)  the a6400 limit and the $120/yr cost for the upgrade which will allow me to use my apps on my camera.  The botom line to me

P.S.

Graphics Processor Info:
GeForce GTX 960/PCIe/SSE2
Check OpenGL support: Passed
Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 432.00
Renderer: GeForce GTX 960/PCIe/SSE2
LanguageVersion: 3.30 NVIDIA via Cg compiler

So GPU  driver v432.00.   but at NVIDIA current is v445.87, You shoul probably update that.

You should have an NVIDIA utility called GeForce Experience, usevit to check and update the Driver, when prompted, select Custom Install as to accomplish a clean install.

This, however, is not your problem or solution.

Lets start all over afresh.

Limit the walkthru to one photo

Limit the walkthru to the Sony A6000

Limit the walkthru to Lightroom v6.14

1. Take a new photograph.

2. Turn the camera off

3. Make sure Lightroom v6.14 is not running.

4. Remove the SD card, place it in your SD card reader

5. Create a new folder on your computer, Copy the photo to that folder. A new folder, not an old one for now.

6. Launch Lightroom v6.24

7. Bring up the Import screen

8. Under source, under Files, navigate to the folder

9. Choose the one photo

10. And select ADD

11. Click import.

what happens, what fails, what exact error message.

Thanks for the input about Nvidia

We are just polishing the turd here and wasting both of our times.
I no longer have an a6000 to take a picture. So, no matter what, my Adobe applications (except the DNG converter) can’t read the files from my a6400, no matter what we do.
I still about 100 a6000 ARW files, but I can convert them into DNG files. I have to get used to doing that with my a6400 anyway – at least until Adobe figures out how to charge me $120/yr to use it.
There is nothing wrong with the folders I am using. These 2 applications suddenly decided that they can no longer read arw files. It is most likely the Camera Raw, that curiously works just fine standalone. This seems to be a theme with Adobe. Shut down support for LR 6.14 and PSE12. Force me to pay $120/yr for a capability that MS and Corel provide for free – read ARW files from my new camera.
Thanks for the effort. But the outcome apparently is that this not a flaw. It is a feature

Also, is there a LR 6.24? Wishful thinking, maybe

As for the Sony A6400, LR v6.14 will never open those RAW files, that takes Lightroom Classic v8.2.1

You will need to continue to convert thise tp DNG outside of Lightroom to work with them.

P.S. not sure if Sony provides a DNG converter, sometimes camera specific converters work better than Adobe ones

Also, Third Party, Iridient, sells nice converters (many Fuji X users absolutly positivly hate Adobe Camera RAW and use Iridient )

My summary-

1) Stop using Bridge. It is long out-dated! Lightroom Catalog replaces Bridge.

2) Don't bother updating ACR. It does not update your applications!

3) Continue to use the Adobe DNG Converter. That is the ONLY WAY you will be able to use ALL your camera files in Lightroom 6.14.

4) "These files were previuously read by the application"- Then you cannot Import them again if they are already in the Catalog!

  • Never used Bridge
  • Dont use ACR
  • Yes. Adobe DNG Converter is the only solution for Adobe products. Other image processing applications have no problems upgrading their Raw capabilities. It's that $120/yr revenue flow that makes Adobe different.
  • I was referring to the capability of LR 6.14 and PSE12 to read ARW files that had been previously imported, before this glitch occurred.
  • Thanks for the link. It is helpful

Ok, did I ever have a brain glitch!  Don't know why I mentioned 'Bridge' (old age, brain decay?)

And, yes- "Adobe DNG Converter is the only solution for (your outdated) Adobe products."

Perhaps you should be pleased they offer this free raw converter to everyone.

"is there a LR 6.24?"- Never will be.

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.

Ok, Just a thought out of the box.

Every time Adobe Camera Raw gets updated the Adobe DNG Converter gets updated so the latest.

At present, the latest versions ACR 12.2.1 (you get this if you have the latest available PS or PSE) / DNG Converter 12.2.1 ( you get this free) / Lightroom Classic 9.2.1( ACR was 4 when Lightroom 1 was released). All these support the full list of cameras presently supported by Adobe.

If you have and an earlier version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements/ACR  Lightroom Classic then the latest version of DNG Converter might be able to help out if you do not wish to pay to upgrade.

I checked the Camera Raw versions associated with LR 6.14 and with PSE12. both are versions recommended by Adobe for those specific applications. They do not recommend the latest Camera Raw updates for these applications

LATEST

Lightroom 6.14 has the same processing engine and supports the same camera models as Adobe Camera Raw Version 9.14 plugin (which functions in Photoshop and PS Elements). Lightroom is a complete application which functions independently of other Adobe applications. That was the last and final update to Lightroom 6. It was released in December 2017 and there have been no updates since and there never will be any in the future. Adobe ceased offing any support for Lightroom V6.x in 2019. Any new camera models issued since (and supported by Adobe Camera Raw) Dec 2017 are not supported by Lightroom 6.14 and never will. That is just the facts of life with respect to LR six.

Photoshop Elements 12 is in a similar situation when Elements 13 was released updates to 12 were ceased. The application functions but no updates.

Adobe Camera Raw which was released almost 20 years ago as ACR v1. It is a plug-in for Photoshop, specific to allow raw files from digital cameras to be processed in Photoshop. Photoshop Elements also utilizes the ACR plug-in with limited core functionality. Whenever Photoshop gets a major upgrade ACR releases a major upgrade. ACR is presently at Version Twelve (12.2.1).

Adobe DNG Converter is an application that changes raw digital photo files to the DNG format file. The application is released in conjunction with Adobe Camera Raw so the latest version is 12.2.1. When you convert raw files to DNG with this application it will place info in the file header for cameras supported in ACR 12.2.1. This is available free from Adobe.
