I cannot update Lightroom CC or Photoshop. I get a message saying I need an app (which app?) from the Microsoft Store in order to link to auphd whatever that is. Please help!

If you subscribe, then your PC or MAC needs the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App.

This App is the 'hub' for all Adobe programs. It downloads and installs programs you have subscribed for. It allows you to 'Activate' the software by being 'Signed In'.
