Lightroom classic performance extremely poor

Hi,

I am trying to use lightroom classic on my dell xps 13 7390. The performance has gone so poor that i am considering discontinuing my adobe subscription. My laptop is running on Intel 10th Gen i7 CPU, 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 512 GB SSD. Graphics is Intel Iris Plus. Contacted Adobe to fix the issue. They connected to my laptop remotely andf tried all tricks. Creating a new catalog resolved the issue for a few mins. But, it relapsed after 15-20 mins. The app is taking up 90% of the CPU and Memory which is unacceptable! Anyone facing the same issue? Any help/suggestion is appreciated.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Past that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

1. How much free space is on your hard drive you keep your catalog on, in %  - 80% disk space available.

2. here do you see the decreased performance? - In Develop module

3.

Camera RAW CACHE how much do you allow?

And do you occasonaly purge it?

- Cache is set to 30 GB and yes I have tried purging it. No luck.

Are you doing a lot of local adjustments (brushing, spot healing) on photos?

Lots of spot healing/brushing on photos, while using a 4K monitor, has been known to causes these types of lags. I am not aware of a good solution.

Here are some thing you can try:

  • Turn off the GPU acceleartion (Preferences->Performance->"Use Graphics Processor" should be set to OFF). This may cause other actions to be slow
  • Do the local adjustments as the next to last editing step, and as the last editing step turn on Transforms and Lens Corrections
  • Do the local adjustments in Photoshop
  • Use a standard HD monitor (1920x1080 or 1920x1200)

Is your notebook plugged into the AC power when this happens or running on batttery?

Have you set the Win 10 Power options to Max Power and limited or turned off the throttling of the CPU and the whole computer to save power?

You're trying to run Lightroom with a very low power GPU for the 4k display connected to it and are doing spot brushes. That is definitely a recipe for slowness. If you lower the resolution, don't do spot brushes or use a higher power GPU you will get much better results. Disabling the GPU might help on this machine.

Something similar happened to me. I installed a new Windows update (version 2004, I was in 19xx something). I tried everything but nothing worked. I decided to roll back to the previous windows installation and now everything is working as usual.

Your issue is the lack of a discrete GPU. That is to say, the Intel Iris Plus is built into the the CPU die lacks the processing power required for Lr Classic to perform many of the the Develop tasks well, especially local adjustments such as brushing and graduate/radial filters. It's also important to note that the Iris Plus doesn't have dedicated VRAM, instead it utilises the ram normally allocated to the application. Disabling GPU acceleration entirely can help, but usually only when using displays up to 1080p or thereabouts. Your System Info suggest the use of a 4K display (internal or external makes no difference as it is very demanding of the GPU and ram). So, disabling GPU enitirely is likely to hurt more than it helps. Intead, you may wish to try disabling the GPU acceleration for image processing (i.e. switch Auto to Custom and only have GPU for display checked). Even then, I suspect you'll be disappointed.

Unfortunatley, none of the above will help you improve performance, but hopefully provides some explanation for what you're seeing.
