Lightroom Classic renders previews as solid red on macOS?

I'm having a constant issue with Lightroom over the last few weeks, maybe as much as a couple of months. Basically, images randomly, and sometimes very frequently, appear as just solid red. Sometimes its just in the grid or loupe view, other times it's in the full size preview. Removing previews sometimes fixes it, but it will crop up again within minutes on another photo. It's making editing a large number of images near impossible.

Completely disabling GPU acceleration *seems* to help, but not with enough consistency for me to feel confident that is the main issue.

Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how to fix it?

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Lightroom Classic. Would you mind sharing the version of Lightroom Classic you're using along with your computers macOS version? When you disable the option to Use Graphics Processor, does the issue stop or do you still experience the same issue? Do you experience this only with the previews or do the images open that way in the Develop module as well?

Have you tried discarding & rebuilding all the previews? If not, you can try that by selecting all images in the Library module, then going to the Library menu, then Previews & disacarding all previews. Then try rebuilding the previews to check if that helps.

If the issue persists, you can try to reset the preferences of Lightroom using the steps mentioned here: https://adobe.ly/2JSym5e

Please backup your presets prior to resetting the preferences.

Let us know how it goes!

Regards,

Nikunj

The problem only appears to occur when GPU accelaration is fully enabled. It does not appear to happen, or at least far less often, when the GPU acceleration is set to off or auto.

Rebuilding previews does not work. It may resolve the issue on certain images, but then create the issue on other images.

Preferences are also not the problem. The system was clean installed less than a week ago and LrC installed from scratch. The problem was present prior to the clean install, and appeared immediately after installing LrC after the clean install.

The problem is more persistent in the Library module, but also an issue, to a slightly lesser extent, in the Develop module.

Thanks for the info! If you're not experiencing the issue (or happens rarely) with the GPU disabled, then it seems the issue may be due to an issue with the graphics drivers.

Just to test, you can try creating a new catalog & check if you experience the same issue in the new catalog as well.

Nikunj

I have three separate catologs that are used, and the problem exists in all of them. Just for good measure, I did create a new catalog and imported a few thousand images. The problem was immediately present in the new catalog.

Please help! LrC is impossibly slow without GPU acceleration. I have three separate catologs that are used, and the problem exists in all of them. Just for good measure, I did create a new catalog and imported a few thousand images. The problem was immediately present in the new catalog.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

"Preferences are also not the problem. The system was clean installed less than a week ago and LrC installed from scratch. The problem was present prior to the clean install, and appeared immediately after installing LrC after the clean install."

An unistall and reinstall of LrC does NOT over-write the old Preferences file. It is retained and if corrupt and causing issues those issues will remain in the reinstalled LrC. Please follow the below procedure to have LrC create a new default settings Prefernces file.

No, I'm not talking about reinstalling LrC, I'm saying the entire computer system was formatted and MacOS clean installed from scratch, and all the adobe software installed fresh. So, all the LrC support and preference files are brand new and less than a week old.

The below post with the same issue would indicate it's a MacOS issue. Do you see the same issue using Mac Finder with the spacebar?

Highly recommend that you add your problem to that Adobe Feedback site discussion listed by Todd Shanner

https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-showing-red-preview...

Include all your info from above. All your observations and comments. Oh, and provide a link back to this community site discussion.

The Feedback site gets Adobe Tech input/feedback. They interact at that site, not so much here at the Community site

The more members piling onto a problem, the better.

Oh, and please in your discussion on this community site, reply that you have added to the feedback site discussion, include the link. Helps others follow the thread.
