I'm looking for an answer with Lightroom Classic. I've been using the program for several years but haven't figured out this nagging issue. When sending files back from editing in Photoshop, at times, Lightroom sets up my library's order into a custom order instead of back into the captured order. I have to reset the order, again, in order to move into the images I haven't yet edited. It's a waiste of time. Hitting "G" and reseting the order is a familiar practice. Has anyone figured out how to lock the order indefinitely? The issue might be collecting upset words from me at my Mac. Adobe! Anyone have an answer for this?

At least for many of them, it appears the issue is related to small drag movements of thubmanils in the filmstrip that don't actually change the order of the thumbnails, but which LR interprets as a change to Custom Order anyway. It may be this issue is exacerbated with tablet pointing devices and third-party mouse utilities. There's a very simple change that Adobe could make but hasn't prioritized.
