P: Scaling issue in Photoshop but only when exporting from Lightroom Classic

Basically when I use Edit in Photoshop 2021 I get scaling issues like this - i.e. the mouse pointer appears in one place but affects the image in another.

Screenshot 2021-10-12 202551.jpg

So when I try and draw around the eye on the right the effect is as above.

If I export the image to the desktop and open manually in Photoshop this doesn't happen - only when exporting from Lightroon Classic.

Both Lightroom and Photoshop individually work fine on different monitors at different resolution, but like most people, I like to use the Edit in Photoshop function as it is a fundamental part of my workflow.

I thought to start with this was a Photoshop problem but now I am not sure.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling without plugins but nothing has changed. I've even tried reinstalling the OS.

You can read the full thread here under the Photoshop section.

Well after two weeks on chat with Adobe technical support I finally got to chat with an excellent Senior technician last night who has acknowledged this is a bug between Lightroom and Photoshop that happens in relatively unique situations. Nothing to do with the multiple monitor set up as it happens when the laptop is operating by itself. It has been referred to the Dev Team but if anyone else happens to come across this, until there is a fix, the workaround is to open Photoshop first, then Ligh

I have been using Lightroom on a 30" 2560x1600 monitor for the past 12 years. It was time to replace my monitor, so after doing some research, I got a 43" 4K monitor. (I have a desk deep enough to push the monitor back so it’s comfortable). The ppi on the 43” is about the same as the 30” at around 100ppi.

The Windows 10 display scaling is set to custom scaling at 115% and the Ease of Access Display settings are set at default. This gives me a good size of interface and crisp fonts on nearly all apps.

Photoshop scaling is fine. In Preferences, Interface, the UI Font size is set to medium with ‘Scale UI to Font’ disabled. I can fit a lot onscreen at a sensible size, with sharp fonts.

I’m having issues with Lightroom however. Whatever I do, the interface size is either too large or small. In the screenshots below you can see Preferences, Interface, Font Size set to Auto, Medium and Large – 150%.

The best size is Medium, but it is rather small and tricky to work with, as clicks on the Develop panel need to be very precise. As you can see from the comparison, the Large – 150% interface size is just too large. I can’t fit enough panels onscreen and loose too much space. I’ve also tried adjusting the program size in Properties, Compatibility, Change high DPI settings in the ‘High DPI scaling override’ sections, but that doesn’t make any difference.

Would it be possible for Adobe to give us more front size options? At the very least, one extra option which would be Large - 125%, which is a standard Windows Display option. That would allow the interface to adjusted more precisely and give better results, regardless of monitor size.

This is a user supported forum. While Adobe employees occasionally monitor and comment here, it is not a forum that is seriously monitored by the development team. The link given is much more closely monitored for that purpose.

OK - this is a weird one. I have read I think most of the scaling discussions on here going back years - manifest files / no manifest files etc, and have tried everything. I've just done a clean install and installed Photoshop - no problem - it works fine on all my three monitors (125% - 1920x1080 15" laptop, 150% 4k 28" monitor and 100% 1920x1080 24" monitor)

However, when I install lightroom and right click an image to edit in photoshop, I get an issue like in the image - I tried to draw a selection around the right hand eye of the cat and got the selection shown (it starts at the right place then jumps, hence the line). The only monitor that it works OK on when exporting from lightroom is the one set to 100% scaling. The other issue is that I cannot click on menu items on the 125% and 150% screen as it always opens a menu one or two to the left.

Screenshot 2021-10-12 202551.jpg

If I export from lightroom to the Desktop and open in Photoshop directly everything works perfectly again, even if lightroom is open.

These are my External Editing settings in lightroom to edit in Photoshop (default settings). I have even tried exporting an image with exactly these settings and it still won't fix it.

Screenshot 2021-10-12 204246.jpg

Like I say I have tried a clean install. My laptop is running WIndows 11 (though it also did it under Windows 10 so that isn't the issue) and the two external monitors are connected via a DisplayLink dock (Wavlink). My laptop has an Intel Graphics Chip as well as an Nvidia RTX 3080 (All drivers up to date).

I'm really not sure what to do. I'll post my System Info from the Photoshop Help menu in the hopes that someone more knowledgeable than me can maybe decipher something in that?

Many Thanks

Ian

I should say, when I said this:

"I have even tried exporting an image with exactly these settings and it still won't fix it."

What I meant was that even when I tried exporting an image with the same settings as export to Photoshop from lightroom, if I opened the image directly into photoshop then there were no problems, but using the edit in Photoshop 2021 is still causing problems.

Two potential problems here.

Docking stations are known to cause a bunch of upredictable issues. Try connecting your external display directly.

Dual graphics is also a known problem. The standard advice is to disable the integrated Intel GPU completely. The problem is that Photoshop uses the GPU for actual data processing, and the result returned  to Photoshop for further processing. It goes back and forth. It's not a passive one-way downstream flow like it used to be.

Thanks - I use the dock as I have a works machine that doesn't have the same connections - the dock keeps things neat, but my home machine will connect to the laptop directly, so that is an easytry and at least rule that out.

I think I have tried disabling the Intel GPU and still had the same problems - I'll try both solutions independently and see if either works - at least it might rule them or one of them out.

Well unfortunately neither of those solutions work. I I have fully disconnected the Dock and plugged everything into my laptop and still get the same results. I have disabled the Intel GPU and the exact same problem still exists. It's really odd that it only happens when I use the "Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2021..." option. Export as a TIFF with the same settings and manually open that in Photoshop and it works normally, as it should, but that completely breaks my workflow.

The only other solution is possibly only use Photoshop on my HD monitor but I would really like to be able to use a normal workflow and use my 4K monitor which is much better quality.

Hi, could you try to check "Deactivate Native Canvas" in the menu Edit/Preferences/Technology preview (Pc) or Photoshop/Preferences/Technology preview (Mac), then restart Photoshop.
This is not a fix, but rather a way to check if the issue appears only with the new technology, and should be reported to the Ps team.

Hi

I have tried that, and it accentuated the problem. In short, I have tried:

  1. Doing a clean install of Windows, including upgrading from 10 to 11 to see if that fixed the issue
  2. Done a fresh install of Photoshop and Lightroom, making sure all plugins were uninstalled
  3. Disconnected the laptop from the dock and tested just with the laptop on
  4. Tried disabling the Intel Graphics Driver, just leaving the RTX3080 active

None of this has fixed the issue, which means I cannot go from lightroom to Photoshop and back again. But if I export the image from Lightroom with exactly the same settings as I have in the Export to Photoshop setting, and then open the image in Photoshop manually, either by double clicking the image or opening photoshop and opening the image, it works perfectly.

So I am completely stumped. I could start exporting images to a folder then reimporting back to lightroom once edited but that is such a hassle and something I shouldn't have to do - it breaks the workflow completely.

If anyone has any other suggestions I am all ears?

Hi, I would try also posting in the Lr forum, there migth be more users there using this workflow. You might want to cross-reference both threads.

I have had a thought that maybe it could be down to storing the photographs on a NAS - I am going to try a test and see if that works

No - nothing to do with the NAS - I copied some photographs onto my desktop and imported into lightroom, and still have the same issue

Well I've posted it on the Lightroom community forum 24 hours ago - nothing. I did a bit of searching on there and found historically there have been issues like this when people have their photographs on a NAS - which mine are, but I've just done a test with a few photos on my desktop imported into lightroom and the problem still exists.

Is this the only forum or is it possible to reach out to Adobe for technical support as this is  real pain in the backend.

Hi

No - I have tried that to see if that worked but no, I'm not, and if I put Photoshop onto the monitor that is 1920x1080 at 100% scaling then everything works fine, but it is my understanding that the scaling of the monitor shouldn't affect the image in this way.

I've just done (another) complete uninstall of everything photography related, including Photoshop and Lightroom, and I have also removed the relevant folders in appdata to make sure that nothing is lingering and everything is clean. I'm not hooked up to any other monitors and just using the laptop in its default state (15inch monitor, 1920x1080 and 125% scaling, which is all default settings).

As stated, it isn't a scaling issue in Photoshop as if I open a file manually in Photoshop it works (even if it is the same file that I just export to the desktop with exactly the same settings that Edit in Photoshop 2021 uses). But try and use Edit in Photoshop and the above occurs. I have tried different images etc but nothing seems to fix this issue. It is so frustrating.

As a test, export the file from Lightroom to your hard drive using the settings in your Preferences>External Editor Preferences.

Open that photo from your hard drive in Photoshop. Does the file still misbehave?

No - I think I said that above - if I Export from lightroom to the hard drive, using the same settings as Edit In Photoshop from Lightroom, it works perfectly. That is why it is so odd.

Can you confirm your scaling setting in Lightroom?
