Lightroom keeps hanging up

Hello,

my lightroom is doing some funny things. I will be editing photos or just going through the grid looking at photos and it will stop responding. I will still be able to move the mouse or use the keyboard commands to move to different modules but none of the editing will work then.

When I quit and restart eveything works fine for a awhile then I need to quit and start again.

Any ideas? I did notice my Smart Previews is huge 104 GB do I need to delete that? I saw that online but I thought I would check here on the Adobe support before I do anything. Been using lightroom for 3 years and never had to do anything, it just worked great!!!

thank you,

Michael

Don’t delete the previews, at least just yet.

Try resetting the Lightroom preferences:

Also, post your System Information as Lightroom Classic reports it. In Lightroom click one Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste into a reply, first line to down just past plug-in info.

Resetting the prefs did not seem to solve this problem. Any other ideas?

Try increasing that, more like 70 (Ok, many online articles on performance boosting, call for 20 as a start)

Supposidly one should base this on number and size of photos in a current session, not total photos in catalog.

As you shoot more and more photos during a session/trip, and import and work on more photos, this goes up, as you get newer cameras with mor pixar's, this goes up.

Why are you creating 'Smart Previews'?

If your original master image files are on a connected hard-drive then you have no need for the Smart Previews at all (save 104Gb!!) (one exception- if you are trying to speed up Lr with the Preference option in Performance tab.)

And how much free space do you have on your operating hard-drive? (>20%?)

"Stop Responding" seems to happen for me (very rarely) when there is intensive hard-drive activity such as- Automatic Face recognition, auto save metadata. Turn these functions off.

Frequently do - [Test Integrity] and [Optimize Catalog] when you backup the catalog.

And you may find some tips here-

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom/performance/

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.
