Lightroom update deleted files from catalog

Lightroom Classic updated and several captures were deleted from the catalog along with all of the work that had been done on them.  I can reimport them, but then I have to start over on my edits.  Anyone have any ideas on how to get them back?

There isn't an import procedure that I'm aware of that would delete several captures. It would seem more likely that you may have inadvertently opened a different catalog. Have you considered that possibility?

What was the exact version of the old and newly upgraded/updated Lightroom Classic?

Were all the missing images from the same general date range?  I suspect you have an older catalog open from before you added and processed those images.
