Lightroom Upgrade message

Last night I was trying to upload images from a compact flash disc and I got a message that said I needed to upgrade.  It wouldn't permit me to upload any of the images.  Later, after arriving home, I selected doing the upgrade.  I had approximately 13,000 images in my All Photographs file.  Today that number was 2100.  One collection with approximately 2100 images shows images in the collection but when I click on the collection all of the images are blank.  There are about 200 images that I had uploaded after doing the upgrade and those are the only ones visible.  Any idea how I can get the original images back from that catalog?

There is a lightroomclassic-3.lrcat dated 2.18.2020 which appears to be the
last one prior to the upgrade....

Should I use that one?

How do I get it into Lightroom? Do I unzip it and the copy and paste it?
I'm an accomplished Lightroom user but not all the technical backroom
stuff. I appreciate your assistance.

Reccomend you copy that file to another location, then double click on the copy, the library previews will get recreated, the catalog will probably show missing folders, missing images, depending on where you locate it

Thank you David....I appreciate the two links. I've glanced at them and
understand the need to back up. I will spend more time reviewing that
information after I get my current issue rsolved. I don't have mine set up
to back after closing every time. I will deal with that. I do back up
most all of my important images to multiple discs. I recently had a hard
drive fail. Because of that I'm switching all of my hard drives to solid
state to hopefully avoid that in the future.

I'm going to try your suggestion.

Thanks again.

David, I was able to go to a previous catalog but the same message showed up again a couple of days later when I was trying to open Lightroom.  I'm attaching the message.  Again, I was able to go to a previous catalog but I'm afraid to click on "upgrade" because I'm not sure I'll have all my previous images and collections.  I believe this message is coming from Adobe but I don't understand why you don't have a choice when to do the upgrade.  It appears to be now or never.  You can't choose "exit" and then re-open Lightroom.  If you try to the message reappears....and if you are able to use a previous catalog you never know when the message will appear again.

Where/how did you get that message about upgrading.

What needed to be upgraded? We need details. We need the exact error message.

Unfortunately I can't give you the exact message. I didn't write it down.
I was at a high school basketball game and usually upload images from the
game between games to Lightroom. When I get home, I finish the task and
upload them to Facebook. I started to upload from a compact flash disk
when the message popped up. It stated that I needed to update my Lightroom
and gave me three options...Update, Cancel and a third option I don't
recall. I chose cancel and the message disappeared but I then tried again
to upload and again the same message popped upon the screen. I cancelled
and decided to wait until I got home to do the upgrade where I had an
internet connection. I did not have an internet connection at the
location. Once I got home, I again started the upload and got the same
message. This time I clicked on Update and it then allowed me to upload.
This was tuesday night. Yesterday, Wednesday, I noticed that my All
Photographs folder had 2100 approximately images listed instead of the
approximately 13000 that had been there. In my collection folders, a
number of collections had disappeared and one had about 1000 images but
they were all blank. When I pulled up the collection the bar at the bottom
of the screen showed all the frames but they were all greyed out. In
retrospect, I believe it was malware or a virus but at the time I didn't
consider that. I was eager to get the images uploaded and posted to
Facebook. As I've thought about it since the incident occurred, I would
have expected Adobe to tell me there was an update available but not force
me to do it at the time. I'm going to take my computer to my computer
gurus to check for a virus.I can recover the important images from a backup
hard drive and I'll try to recover the rest from a backup lrcat file. I'm
not sure how to do that since I've never done it before. I fairly
proficient with Lightroom but I'm not sure how all the technical pieces fit
together.

Are you usaing Lightroom the Cloud Centric version or LR Classic the Traditional version?

It does not sound, to me, that it was the LR catalog (that is if you are using LR Classic) that needed to be upgraded.

None of what you describe sounds like it was a LR Classic update or upgrade.

Please state the exact verion of LR you are using on your Computer.

If you are using a pad of some type and have LR installed on that please state what version is being used on that.

You said between game you upload to LR? Do you mean IMPORT into the Lr Classic catalog/

Sorry but I am confused. You do not Uplaod to LR Classic, you Import.

Then you said "when I get home I finish the task"? What task? Importing the images into the LR Classic catalog?
