Making Lightroom Faster?

I am up to date with Lightroom Classic 9.0. I've always just lived with some painfully slow processing because I knew my files are big. I could import a shoot of 600 - 1,000 images, all shot in RAW. About 30 mb each. My Windows machine has 16GB of RAM, plenty of HD space, and 2.60GHz processor (Intel Core i7). It's not a wimp.

But when I start to view photos, Lightroom temporarily freezes (and my laptop's fan kicks on). When I try to click between menus, there's a freeze. Most things freeze. They unlock in a few seconds, but obv this is a giant pain in aggregate.

What am I missing here? I've read everything that Lightroom needs to be rebuilt, to little tweaks to make it faster, but nothing really works.

Does anyone have a specific recommendation for my situation? I feel like there must be something I'm missing.

I will split this up into a few seperate postings

1. As you are using a laptop. And as you appear to be having a cooling issue. Are you running Lightroom Classic soly on battery power? Or is the laptop plugged in?

2. What is your power settings? See tip 8 in: https://au.pcmag.com/windows-10-1/5180/11-tips-to-speed-up-windows-10

Do not use tip 8 when under battery power only on a laptop.

4. Turn the laptop off, remove the batteries and inspect them. Looking for swearing as an indication of damaged or falling apart batteries.

5. Catalog corruption?

Create a new catalog. Place it on your external hard drive (in case posting 6 is called for). open the new catalog. Does the laptop behave?

6. Possible external device issues

Being as you have a laptop, and as such has its own screen, probably a touch pad, and keyboard, Disconnect all external devices. Mouse, keyboard, monitor, microphone, speaker, card reader, tablet, phone, external hard drive, etc (a desktops would of course require the mouse, keyboard, and monitor to be retained)

For this diagnostic, if you keep your catalog on ab external hard drive, use that new one on your internal drive.

Run Lightroom, does it now behave? If so, one at a time add devices back. Usual suspects are smart phones especially Android, Hard drives dying, occasional card reader (but often the &SB cord not the actual reader)

I do need to use my mouse and wireless keyboard. (Because of the way my desk is set up.) But I can disconnect other things plugged in. Never knew that could be a factor.

I don't use an external hard drive for anything but archiving my RAW files. The catalogs live on my laptop's SSD hard drive. Do you recommend I use an external harddrive differently?

From that Graphics Processor Info, I take it this is a Laptop?

And you do not have an actual GPU, just an integrated video control?

I looked up GPU since I don't know what that is. I just have my internal graphics card, but I think I'm seeing they make external graphics engines (for lack of a better word).

Do you recommend?

No, that section on external devices is all about diagnostics to see if one of those devices is broken, if one if those devices is causing the problem

A device can be failing

A USB  cord can be failing

A device driver could be in need of an update

A conflict could exist with a USB port address

Removing as many devices as you can is a common diagnistic to see if one if them is the issue. If after removal LRC  behaves, then you look fir what one is the cause, one at a time. Then you would look to see why.

As to where to place your catalog, place it on your fastest hard drive. In your case your SSD as you have it already. Just make sure that you have at least 25% free space on that drive. Only place to NOT put your catalog would be network accessed storage, a NAS. LRC does not play nicely on a NAS (the catalog that is). Photos can be anywhere.
