Merge 2 catalogs and keep two separate hard drives

Using LR 9.2.  I have a LR Catalog for older photos on an external HD and current photos (separate LR Cat) on my iMac HD.  I'd like to merge the external LR Cat into the newer one and keep the separate HDs.  Will this cause problems - one catalog with two hard drives?

In the catalog with the newer photos, select File->Import from Another Catalog, and select the catalog containing the older photos.

The catalog cannot be split across two drives.

Do you mean one catalog on one drive, with photos stored on two hard drives? (This is possible)

Or do you mean one catalog file split on two hard drives (This is not possible)

Yes - one catalog with photos stored on two hard drives? (This is possible)

The external HD has the 1st 10 years of photos and the internal HD has everything from that point on to my current photos.  When I want to get to the older photos I have to switch catalogs.  It's a pain having to switch back and forth especially if I want to get one or two older photos and the come back to the current set.

Yes it can and does for most users.

You can have your photos stored on any drive that is connected to your system, even Local Area Networked drives.
