my xps15 -9560 is clocking down to 0.8 GHz every time i use an adobe application (bridge, photoshop, lightroom) - or maybe it always when the nvidia display driver is supposed to be used. google does not seem to know anything about this. do you?

obviously, those are the programs most needing the computing power. they are almost useless at 0.8 GHz...

Could be a heat issue and or battery saving feature.

Have you set the system to Max performance? That will make the fan (fans) run faster and more often (possibly Always) but give you better performance.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

Sounds like a hardware problem, perhaps mfg quality problem.

it's not a heat issue, as the throttling happens before the system would have become hot. and it didn't happen with an earlier version of windows 10. have tried various nVidia drivers, now i have the latest from nVidia.

Why on earth are you running LrC 8.2.1?

Have you set the system to Max Performance and Tested?

yes, have set the max performance. it appears that if i disable the nVidia graphics, the system doesn't clock down. but of course lrc would like to use the more powerful graphics.

Then maybe it is the GPU in your system that is Overheating and throttling the CPU down to less the heat build up in the GPU chip.

This might be something you need to take up with Dell.

the clockdown happens before the system has had time to overheat. hesitant to contact dell - likely they'll just tell me to reinstall win 10 & lrc.

You don't know that. A chip overheating can happen very quickly. Way before the system itself gets hot.

i do know that. i constantly run a utility to display temperatures on the system.

It is a Dell problem.

sure. maybe a bios update has caused this. most articles on the machine are dealing with thermals only, which is not the culprit in my case...

seems that a bios update from dell's site (xps_15_9560_1.21.0.exe), which i guess is bios 21 may have cured the problem. at least so far so good.
