I've been photographing knives and trying to get the background white using auto mask. I select brush, auto mask but it paints the image. I've tried both raw and jpeg. Relatively new to photography, pleas advise.

I don't think you'll be able to do this in Lightroom - it wasn't designed to do this kind of editing.

And even if you managed to get a white background, you would have no control over the mask edge.

Photoshop (being a pixel editor) is much better suited for this task.
