Hello,
I´m using LR Classic for years now. Never had this problem. And to my great astonishment found nothing about it in search machines ...
I want to apply a tag to an image as I do for years now. But in the new catalogue I created for the year 2021 with the return button I get the answer "Internal error: Can´t apply this tag to this image." But the tag is there. When I go to the next or previous image, the tag however disappears. I have created a new catalogue and reimported the photos. Same problem. I imported the photos to an older catalogue. There was no problem. I exported those photos to a new catalogue, the problem came back. I tried other pictures, other tags, same result. I have chosen another (older) catalogue and until now I can tag any photo there. The problem does not appear in this older catalogue. What can I do to create a new catalogue without that problem?
Thanks for your help.
Susanne

In a first step you should try to reset the Lightroom preferences.
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/
If this doesn't help we need more informations about your environment.
Which operating system do you use?
Which version of Lightroom do you use?
Please post the exact version and not only phrases as "recent", "latest" and so on.
Do you get an error message? If yes, please post the exact message or an screenshot.
What has been changed on your system before the error occured?

This is, what I copied from the catalogue, that functions well. But I don´t think that makes any difference?
I made another attempt today. I imported photos from this catalogue to the one, who is failing. And LR told me that he could not import the 2 folders, because there was some error, but did it nevertheless. Then I tried to add some tags to the new imported photos and it says: "ein interner Fehler ist aufgetreten [an internal error has appeared]: ?: attempt to index fild ´parent´(a nil value). The error message is half german half english, must be because I´m using LR in german, but coming to the HELP function, there is not always a translation in german ...
I think there may have been a windows update, but I´m not sure. And updates from Adobe, that, I´m sure of.
I changed the name of the preferences folder, but it does not seem to change anything. Now it´s again the "Ein interner Fehler ist aufgetreten: ?;=; attempt to index filed ´parent´(a nil value)" I get.

"attempt to index filed ´parent´(a nil value)"
This person solved the problem by exporting his entire catalog:
If that doesn't help, I recommend you post a bug report in the official Adobe feedback forum, where Adobe wants all bug reports and feature suggestions:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/send-bug-report-feature-request-adobe/
Be sure to include the first ten lines of the menu command Help > System Info. Provide all the details, rather than linking back to this thread -- experience shows that Adobe developers tend not to follow the links. Product developers read everything posted there, but rarely participate here, which is primarily a user-to-user forum.
Then try to contact the Adobe employee, as I described above.

"Internal error: Can´t apply this tag to this image."
Is that the exact unchanged unedited word-for-word error message?

Yes. That are the exact words.

Is the error message more like:
Internal error: Can´t apply this tag to this image.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Very likely your catalog has gotten into an inconsistent (buggy) state. See this thread for someone else encountering the same error message in a slightly different context of applying names to faces (which also assigns the corresponding keyword):
If you can identify particular keywords that are causing the problem, then the workaround suggested in this reply by Adobe employee Simon Chen might help:
You might try contacting Simon (as he suggested to the person in that thread), but Simon has posted in the feedback forum for 9 months, so I don't know if he's still with Adobe or the Lightroom team. (His Linkedin profile says he is, but that doesn't mean much.)

I think it doesn´t matter but this is what the catalogue which functions well is giving. There is now difference in information, just that the failing catalogue has another name.
