I have multiple copies of the same image, when I delete the unwanted I remove them from the disc. When I reopen Lightroom there is a grey box with the message " file could not be found."
I remove the greyboxes from LIghtroom and the next time I open LR they're back and the count remains the same.. anybody?

You need to delete them from WITHIN Lightroom, not outside of it. Then it knows to delete that entry from its database.
This is true for any Finder operations (move, delete, rename) etc. All this can be done from within Lightroom and should be.

So, I have removed the images in Lightroom Classic and I have removed them using the delete from disc option in Lightroom Classic. Both ways the count doesn't change and grey boxes replace the place the photo was at. So thanks for your advice. Is there another way to erase within Lightroom ?

I do not have an answer, but there have been other forum posts of the Grey "Ghost" thumbnails that cannot be deleted, so some links-
