I've been searching for a program to handle my ever expanding catalog. I Shoot events (Photog) and i have a few shooters. (for over a decade) Right now I Have about 40 Terabytes (Drobo, and a few Externals) plugged into my Imac Pro and Having trouble with Lighroom even reading it all. The First attempt was to just read/upload into lighroom, it got sluggish at around 6 Terabyes and evenually the mouse just continuesly reads and freezez the program with every operation at about 20 terabyes if even that much. then there was an update with lightroom classic and now it said it cat even use my old catalog and has to upgrade. smh.. It took about 3 weeks to a month to upload all the photos that i did have uploaded.. Someone HELP!! is this even the right program i should be using? hinestly it wasnt actually working anyway smh lost..

Major upgrades (8.x to 9.0) of Lightroom almost always require a catalog format upgrade to support the new features. The data in the old catalog is migrated to a new catalog. The old catalog is not changed.
What are the old and new versions of Lightroom you are working with?
How many photos are we talking about?
For my event photography, I have a new catalog for each year. Makes for easier archiving of the data and images.

Are you talking about the software named Lightroom Classic, or are you talking about the new software named Lightroom?

Upgrading the catalog soes not change any images and you do Not have to reimport anything.
Just the Catalog File is Upgraded. The catalog file is a Database file. There are No images in the catalog file. Your images are Referenced into the Database file, the Catalog file.
Your actual catalog is fairly large so it may taqke a while to do the upgrade. But no images are changed or altered in any way when the catalog is upgraded. It is just the Format of that catalog that is changed to work properly with the newer version of LR Classic.
