When you select to delete an image in Lightroom a pop up will appear with the option to delete from disk or remove.

If you choose delete from they should go the the trash if you have not deleted from the trash they should be there.

If you choose to remove then they should be in the hdd folder where they were stored. You should be able to use the add feature in the import dialog, if there is no xmp dater written to file you would have lost all the work you have done with the files. (P.S. See Johan' post below recovery from a Catalog is an option)

As your edits and metadata are in the catalog, not in the images, the best way to solve this is by restoring the catalog from a backup. If you did not delete the images from disk, that is all you need to do.
