I am running Lightroom Classic 8.3.1 and it did mention an update, but I can't upgrade to 9.x.
I am running on MacOS Catalina 10.15.6 on a late 2013 Macbook Pro.
Is there a technical limitation blocking this upgrade?

I don't know anything about the Mac. Try upgrading your Creative Cloud Application Manager and see if that makes a difference. That is where you need to go to acquire the update.

Thanks, did that first - that one says its up to date. So I guess there is a (hardware) limitation and Adobe blocks 9.x on my 'old' macbook.
If I choose updates in Lightroom, I get "Updates have been disabled for this machine. Please contact your administrator" (which is me...)

But the message doesn't indicate hardware problems. It indicates the administrator is needed, which is usually permissions or some other operating system setting. As I am not a Mac person, I leave it there; I'm sure someone who knows will be along.

Indicates some security action, a setting, was taken to prevent normal users from installing software.
Have you tried logging in as full Admin? Not just a user account with Admin rights, but the full Admin.
Also, this computer is not connected to a University, or Corporate, or Government LAN?

Before I deinstall, reinstall whole adobe suite, I just want to figure out if it will make a difference
