Edit in photoshop option does not work. When selected, photoshop opens but the image will fail to load into photoshop. I have updated all aps and plugins, uninstalled/reinstalled photoshop, logged out and back in to the Adobe creative cloud.

I sure wish I could help. In my case, I’ve now gone through each of the troubleshooting steps suggested by Rikk Flohr in the thread on the Adobe forum, which include:

  1. Verify Camera Raw is up to date
  2. Reset Photoshop Preferences
  3. Remove old installations of Photoshop (not relevant in my case)
  4. Reinstall Photoshop (Current)
  5. Reset Lightroom Preferences
  6. Reinstall Lightroom (Current)
  7. Use Adobe Cleaner Tool to completely remove Adobe apps and reinstall

The “Lightroom-Photoshop round trip” now works about 70% of the time, which is definitely an improvement. But it’s not reliable or consistent. For example, this morning I edited an image in Photoshop, saved, closed, and it didn’t appear in LR. I reopened that same image, edited, saved, closed… still didn’t appear in LR. There is nothing different about this image than others that the round trip worked on yesterday, that I can tell.

This has led to a situation where I have to do a “Save as…” of the image I edited to my desktop, and then import it into LR to stack with the original image, to be sure that I won’t lose the edits.  This is not the way Lightroom and Photoshop are supposed to work together.

I guess at this point the only thing left to do is call Adobe? This is a *very* strange problem given that it works some of the time but not all of the time—and that completely reinstalling LR and PS didn’t help.

I’ve been away from home for 2 weeks, and during this time I’ve been working on my new 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro. When I get home tomorrow, I will try this on my 2017 iMac Pro. I don’t recall ever having this problem on that computer. If it works consistently with that computer, I wonder if it has something to do with Apple Silicon. Can’t imagine what that would be, but I’m fresh out of ideas.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography or anyone else, if you have any other suggestions, I’m all ears!

Ok, a final update before I call Adobe.

I installed Lightroom Classic on my MacBook Pro with the intention of determining whether the “round trip” issue is being caused by Lightroom (cloud version) or Photoshop.

The “round trip” worked flawlessly 10 times in a row, with 10 different photos, using Lightroom Classic.

This tells me the problem is with Lightroom (cloud version), not Photoshop.

Good news. I spent over an hour on a chat this morning with an Adobe support tech. He did a remote session and made a few changes:

  • Changed permissions to "read-write" for the Adobe folder in Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support
  • Ticked the "Enable Legacy 'Save as...'" box in Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling
  • Changed the name of the Camera Raw folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe, then reinstalled Camera Raw

One of those changes (not sure which one) seems to have fixed the problem. I just did 12 round trips and it worked every time. I'm still reluctant to call it solved, since it has been intermittent. But I've never done 12 in a row without a failure, so this is encouraging.

Thank you for the suggestion, I tried a few times doing the process you sent me, unfortunately the problem is still going. Which is sad and quite nerve-racking, I have some pictures to deliver next Tuesday of an event I shoot.

Hope this issue get to be solved!

I'm posting this as a new thread, because a bunch of different threads related to similar—but not identical—issues got merged, and they are very difficult to follow now.

I'm having two issues with how Lightroom and Photoshop are working together:

  1. When I choose "Edit in Photoshop" from Lightroom, and then edit that image in Photoshop, save it, and close, about 30-40% of the time that image does not appear back in Lightroom.
  2.  When I add an image (from a folder on my computer) to Lightroom, and then stack that image with an existing stack, an entirely new stack gets created. Then I have the original stack that I was trying to add the new image to, and a new stack with all of the images from the original stack, plus the new image.

Important note: I do not experience either of the two issues above with Lightroom (cloud) on my iMac Pro, or in Lightroom Classic on my iMac Pro or my 14" M1 MacBook Pro. So, I suspect that these issues are some kind of bug with the M1/Apple Silicon version of Lightroom (cloud).

I spent >2 hours with an Adobe support representative two days ago. Here is a list of the troubleshooting steps we did:

  • Deleted Lightroom and Photoshop preferences
  • Reinstalled Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Reinstalled Camera Raw
  • Changed permissions on the Adobe folders in /Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support to "read-write" for all accounts (administrator, user, public).
  • Used Adobe Cleaner Tool to completely remove all Adobe apps and then reinstall them

These steps did seem to solve the #1 issue above. I was able to consecutively open 11 images in Photoshop, save, close, and see them back in Lightroom, properly stacked with their originals.

Unfortunately, after 24 hours, I started to experience the issue again.

I'm going to contact Adobe support again, but I don't have much faith that anything will come of it. We've already gone through all of the troubleshooting steps they could recommend. I suspect this is a bug related to the M1 Macs and Lightroom. Does anyone else that is experiencing this behavior also have an M1 Mac?

Do you have an M1/Apple Silicon Mac?

I've isolated the problem to Lightroom (cloud) on my M1 MacBook Pro. I don't experience it with Lightroom (cloud) on my iMac Pro, or in Lightroom Classic on either my M1 MacBook Pro or iMac Pro.

I documented the issue in another thread here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-ecosystem-cloud-based-discussions/photoshop-and-lightroom-n...

I just ran another batch of 16 images (DNGs, CR2s, JPEGs, Tiffs) on my M1 MAC (12.0.1)  from LrD 5.0 to PS 23.0.1 and all 16 worked fine.

One additional item to try in troubleshooting is to see if the Mac User Account is corrupt.

  • Create a test user with full Admin permissions
  • Attempt your test while logged into this account.

Sorry, forgot to mention that they had me login as the root user, and the problem still occurred. So it's not a corrupt user account.

So much for my theory that it's an issue with M1 Macs. I don't know what to try at this point. It's mind-boggling.

I am asking you to do something different than logging in as the root user as support had you try.  Logging in as Root will not rule out a corrupt user account - which is what we are trying to do as a next step.

before a certain LR update on MacOS whenever I imported a picture from LR to PS, edited it and saved it in PS this picture was automatically imported to LR again (I think as a tiff). But that doesn't work anymore. I also couldnt find an option in PS.

Hello Rick,

Thank you for working to help us. I worked on your first 6 steps:

  1. Verify Camera Raw is up to date
  2. Reset Photoshop Preferences
  3. Remove old installations of Photoshop
  4. Reinstall Photoshop (Current)
  5. Reset Lightroom Preferences
  6. Reinstall Lightroom (Current)

I did an experimental round trip and noticed that LR was updating to the Cloud after saving and closing PS. This got me excited to see progress. The edited photo did not appear stacked with the original photo though. But I did find the edited photo in "Recet Edits."

I feel like there must be a setting I am overlooking that stacks the original and edited photo together.

Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have been facing the same problem, on the Windows 10 machine. I have another Windows 11 machine, same versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, where the problem doesn't happen. On the Windows 10 machine I've already followed several steps that have been reported, but the problem persists and I think we'll have to wait for Adobe to fix the defect.

Greetings,

I recently received a new M1 MacBook Pro and I am running into an issue where images I open from Lightroom into Photoshop do not sync back to Lightroom if I add layers to the image.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Select a photo in Lightroom and select Edit in Photoshop.
  2. Add an adjustment layer to the image (any will do)
  3. Save and close the image in Photoshop

For me, the image appears to save successfully, but it never appears back in Lightroom.

Notes:

  • The image does sync back to Lightroom if I edit it in Photoshop, but do not add layers.
  • I have Photoshop set to not ask about tiff settings.
  • I have maximize compatibility for PSD/PSB on and set to always.
  • I have deleted and re-added the local Library after uninstalling and re-installing the app.
  • This issue does not happen with Lightroom Classic on this computer (I installed it for test purposes after this started happening).
  • I've spoken with others and they have not been able to replicate this issue on their computers, but most use LrC on non-M1 Macs or Windows machines.
  • I had no problem with this when I was working off of an M1 iPad Pro.

At this point, short of switching to Lightroom Classic, I am at a loss of what to do. Any help, suggestions, or tips would be helpful. Thank you!

I'm having almost the exact same issue. From further above in the thread:

I spent >2 hours with an Adobe support representative two days ago. Here is a list of the troubleshooting steps we did:

  • Deleted Lightroom and Photoshop preferences
  • Reinstalled Lightroom and Photoshop

  • Changed permissions on the Adobe folders in /Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support to "read-write" for all accounts (administrator, user, public).
  • Used Adobe Cleaner Tool to completely remove all Adobe apps and then reinstall them

I continue to have the problem, and I have no idea what to do about it.

In my case, I only have the problem with my M1 MacBook Pro (14" M1 Pro) and Lightroom (cloud). I do not have it with my M1 MacBook Pro and LrC, and I don't have it with my iMac Pro and both Lightroom (cloud) and LrC.

Thank you for the information! I tried those steps and still have the issue. It is exactly the same for me. It only happens on my M1 MacBook Pro 14". My iPad Pro doesn't have this issue, nor did my older Intel MacBook Pro. This is definitely a bug that needs to be fixed. In the mean time, I need to figure out if I can work with this, or switch back to Lightroom Classic.

As a follow up,  this issue seems to be specifically affecting M1 Pro and Max machines (MacBook Pros) running macOS Monterey and using Lightroom (not Classic) to round-trip to and from Photoshop.

  • If you make modifications to Background layer destructively and save out, it goes back into Lightroom.
  • If you add a layer, it does not.
  • I also tried to trick it by first opening and saving the TIFF file with no modifications (which worked) and then re-opening the TIFF file from Lightroom into Photoshop, adding a layer and saving back out and that did not work. The TIFF file is unaltered in Lightroom and re-opening the TIFF file again in Photoshop has no additional layers (no modifications were made to the image in Lightroom in between).

So far I've tried deleting and re-creating the local Library for Lightroom, deleting preferences, even doing a complete uninstall and re-install of all Adobe apps using the Adobe Cleaner tool and instructions, but to no avail.

This is a bug, and is definitely not resolved. I would be happy to provide a screen recording of the workflow if that would help the people at Adobe to resolve! For now, the only options are to save your files as PSDs or TIFFs seoparately and re-import into Lightroom if you need them there, or to switch to using Lightroom Classic, which does not have this issue.

Further up in this thread @Rikk Flohr: Photography said he has an M1 Mac but doesn't have these issues. So maybe it's specific to M1 Pro and M1 Max machines?
