P: (Win) Lr Export Bad argument #1 to stringByAppendingPathComponent (string expected, got nil)

Community Beginner ,
Mar 03, 2022 Mar 03, 2022

Hello,

Issue:

I have a user experiencing an issue while trying to export photos using Lightroom. Not Lightroom Classic.

Lightroom Classic works as expected.

I reinstalled Lightroom fresh, so it should be the latest version of the application.

Screenshot:

lightroom error.png

The user previously used the application on their home computer, but transitioned to their work computer and receives this error while attempting to export photos. I wonder if it has to do with where the application is trying to export files, but I have no idea how to change that.

Any further information, I can provide. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We are here to help.

Could you please confirm the version of Lightroom & the exact version of the operating system(Windows + R > Winver & press OK) you are working on? Have you recently updated the operating system? Is Microsoft OneDrive backup enabled on this machine? Please share the location where you are trying to export.

Check the registry entries in the following location(might require IT authorization as this is on a work machine):

  • Press Windows + R > type in 'Regedit' and press OK to open Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to the following location in Registry Editor: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  • Check & ensure the data values for all the registries are as below on your computer.

After applying these changes, please restart the computer and export in Lightroom.

We hope this helps.

Regards,

Sameer K

Hi Sameer,

Thanks for replying - I will have administrator access to the computer in question as they are a client of mine.

They are using OneDrive.

Current Windows version is 10.0.19044.

I cannot verify the version of Lightroom at this time as user is not available today and the computer is powered off, I cannot view it remotely. I will need to get back to you there.

I will also get back to you on verifying their registry entries.

The application I believe is attempting to export to "My Pictures" folder. This folder does not exist anymore which I think is the cause of the error. I think it has to do with the folder previously living within OneDrive.

Thanks. I will update again next week.

Hi Sameer,

Information for you.

Windows Version: Windows 10 Version 21h2 (Build 19044.1415) Most recent update was installed Dec. 29 2021 (Surface System 1.0.8.0 Drivers)

Lightroom Version: 5.2 x64 [ 20220128-1049-86119e0 ] (Jan 28 2022)

OneDrive backup is enabled on this machine.

It looks like this organization moved their user folders from a shared file server to OneDrive (previously we were exporting photos to a shared folder on the file server). So, we are now trying to point Lightroom to export photos to a OneDrive folders which I cannot figure out how to do.

In the screenshot: The folders on \\bbbs-fs01.bbbscommunity.local are not accessible unless the user is on the VPN (which is very slow which is why they don't use the VPN mostly while working from home.) I tried exporting while connected, and while not connected to the VPN and neither worked.

Thanks!

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We are here to help.
Changes to the default behavior/by design are not possible. The Pictures folder must be kept in a local location for export to work as expected.

Please check if the registry entries could be re-configured as suggested above, and the rest of the folders are not required to be changed. If this comes in place, the user might export to a different Onedrive associated folder.

We hope you understand,

Sameer K

Hi Sameer,

Just to update, I changed the registry entry for My Pictures to %USERPROFILE%\Pictures and that resolved the issue. Thank you!

I had to export around 500 pictures and was getting the same error. None of the suggestions on this page helped.

It worked when I exported in smaller batches of 100. So I had to export 5 times the next batch/selection of 100.

I was getting the same error message. I think I found the problem. Initially I tried to save in smaller batches until I found one problematic image marked as DNG dng.JPG. All ARW (sony made) files would export successfully except this DNG file. The moment I excluded the DNG file from export, all worked fine.

Hallo Sameer,

Recently, I discovered that my export does not work anymore.

Whenever I try to export any pictures (edited and non-edited) the export screen does not show up. Whenever I right-click to export as JPG (Large) an error message shows up: "Bad Argument #1 ... etc"

I uninstalled Lightroom and deleted any files related to Lightroom using REVO Uninstaller. Uninstalling Adobe Cloud and using a clean install did nothing. The export function does not work as intended anymore, what to do now?

Hey, @Joel William29771817x4ix. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

What exact version of Lightroom and the operating system are you working on? Is this a personal or work (IT-managed) machine?

Has this started after recent updates to the OS? Is Microsoft OneDrive backup enabled on this machine?

Please refer to this thread where I've detailed the steps you can take to potentially identify the cause & fix the issue yourself: https://adobe.ly/4ctFNLJ

Let me know if this helps. Thanks!

Hey, @Sviatlana_Daruzhynska3255. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

What is the image format of the original files? Does this happen with all the images? Before going further, you must ensure you have all the data backed up locally or on the cloud.

You can log on to Lightroom Web (https://adobe.ly/3LUKpiM) to check and confirm everything is synced.

Check the registry entries in the following location (might require IT authorization as this might be a work machine):

  • Press Windows + R > type in 'Regedit' and press OK to open Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to the following location in Registry Editor: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Please share a screenshot of this window.

Thanks!

Bonjour,

Merci !

Thanks @Sameer K ! My pictures are in RAW format. And yes, it occures whith all the images.

I feel like I have backups scattered all over locally, taking up space. In the preferences, I see a message indicating that the disk is full. That's probably where the problem comes from. I also have an error message:
