Is it possible through LR or a plug-in to be able to use say a QR code to help sort photos from a volume photo shoot? For example a QR code is generated for each person. QR is photographed followed by photos of that person, then next persons QR code and there photos and so on?

I don't think so. Lightroom has in-built facial recognition.
