Color Profile when added via copy or import profiles need updating

New Here ,
Jun 14, 2025 Jun 14, 2025

I hope this all makes sense.

I've recently moved from using LR Classic, to LR Desktop and Mobile, so possibly I am not understanding something.

I've had chance to test this on both an iPad and a Mac, and it behaves the same way on both devices, but I don't think it is correct as I have to update every image...  Please see the Process below.

This applies to both Lightroom Mobile on iPad, and Lightroom Desktop on a Mac:

Lightroom Desktop v8.3.1 arm64 [ 20250505-2344-4fb7147 ] (May 5 2025)

hardware: Macbook Pro

O/S: 15.5 (24F74)

-----

Lightroom Mobile v10.3.1.71F6C8/202

hardware: iPad Pro M4 11 inch

O/S: iPadOS 18.5 (22F76)

--

Process (same on both devices):

Option 1:

1. Set up an import profile that will set all images to use color profile: Adaptive Color at 100%

2. Import a batch of images (could be 1 image or more) using the import profile set up above.

3. Select one of the imported images

4. Select Edit

5. In Image Edit, it can be seen that the profile is: Adaptive Color at 100% but when you enter edit, there's a blue pop-up message stating "Some AI settings need to be recomputed - Update".  Note: Nothing was changed since the import, and the cloud sync was allowed to complete before entering Edit.

Option 2:

1. Have a set of images that have been imports with Camera settings only.

2. Edit one of those images to have a color profile: Adaptive Color at 100%.

3. Copy the Choose Edit Settings to Copy, and select the Profile: Adaptive Color setting only.

4. Paste this Edit Setting only an album of images.

5. Select one of the images

6. Select Edit

7. The blue pop-up message stating "Some AI settings need to be recomputed - Update".  There have been no updates since the paste.

One thing I do notice, is that even after the paste in Option 2, or the Import using the profile in Option 1, the preview images in either Grid format and the Film Strip look muted and dull. But once the blue update button has been pressed, then the preview image looks correct. I have to Edit and update every one of these images to have the AI be updated, which makes the who point of setting up the import profile or copying edit settings pointless. This should be done automatically at Import or Paste stage in my opinion. If I am doing something wrong, please let me know.

Regards

Colin.

Hi @colinf11252574, thanks for reaching out and for sharing those detailed steps!

Just to clarify—are you editing the same photos on mobile that you also work on in the desktop version? If you had masks created on mobile using smart previews, Lightroom might now be trying to generate higher-resolution versions since the originals are available.

You could try batch updating your images by selecting them in Grid view on your Mac, then going to Photo > Update AI Settings in X Photos. That might help smooth things out.

Hope this helps!
Alek

Hi Aleke,

Not exactly... I was describing similar processes on both platforms. If you just take LR Desktop in isolation, ignoring mobile, then that's what is happening. I import images from an SD card, using a profile that has Adaptive Color set on it. Then after I've waited for adobe cloud to finish syncing. If I open on of the images on LR Desktop, I get the blue message that says "Some AI settings need to be recomputed - Update". At this point I've not done any editing on any platform. I am still looking on LR Desktop after importing the images. Firstly, I do notice that the images in the Album don't look as though the color profile has been actioned. In fact, the images in the album look like dull RAW images. Once I go into the Edit profile on LR Desktop with one of the images selected, that blue message comes up. It does show that Adaptive Color has been applied, but the image still looks like a dull RAW file. Once I click on it to update, then the image seems to now apply the Adaptive Color profile, and looks as it should. To me, it feels like the color profile is being assigned, but not being applied, until I have to edit every single one of the imported images.

Is that any clearer? I was just trying to say, it doesn't matter if this import and edit was done on LR Desktop or LR Mobile, they both behave in the same way.

Regards

Colin.
