Does Lightroom Mobile create a sidecar file

I can import onto my iPad Pro from an external SSD and then edit image files in Lightroom. As far as I can tell it doesn't write to an XMP or sidecar file after doing an edit. I am anxious to be able to continue edits on a desktop after starting them on mobile without using WiFi image synch.

iPad Pro M4 current version iPad OS and a SanDisk ssd connected to a USB-c port on the iPad.

Hello @waldhaus1

Let me clarify a bit.  When the Lightroom Mobile app applies extensive edits to an images, technically a sidecar XMP is created.  There's simply no way to access that XMP on the iOS platform, so I don't blame Rob for commenting that these don't exist.

Since you are also using Lightroom Desktop, images and edits (Including XMPs) created on LR Mobile will sync to LR Desktop, which can read and further update the XMP as needed based in any additional edits.  And exporting Origin

My understanding of your question is- No.

All mobile devices with Lightroom-Mobile (Phone, iPad ), access you photos stored in the Lightroom ecosystem (Cloud). Edits made on mobile devices are also stored in the Cloud .

Lightroom-Desktop (installed on a Mac or PC) will also see those images and edits when connected to the internet. (ie, WiFi or cable)

Lightroom-Desktop has a 'Local Mode' that uses a browser interface to view photos on a 'local' connected hard-drive where sidecar XMP files are created when editing in 'Local' mode, but these edits are not associated with the Cloud photo and its edits.

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 14.0, Photoshop 26.0, ACR 17.0, Lightroom 8.0, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 15.0.0, Windows-11.

Back on mobile the way to export images with edit info that allows images to be edited further is to export as DNG.  The edit metadata that would go into a XMP sidecar will be embedded as in the DNG.

I hope this helps a bit.

That is very helpful. If I understand correctly to further edit on desktop Lightroom classic I should export to a DNG and then import that into Lightroom classic.

I appreciate all the information.
