You do not have to save edits like you do in other imaging software. All edits are automatically saved, because they are 'non-destructive'. That means they are saved with the image, not in the image. That also means there is no reason to want to save the unedited photo, because the original photo remains untouched anyway. If you want to use an edited photo outside of Lightroom, then you need to export it. On export the edits are saved in the exported photo, which is a new copy.
