Now that Lightroom can access files stored locally does this apply to images stored on a NAS. I select local in Lightroom and it displays all my folders but when selecting a specific folder I get the message "this folder does not contain editable files" clicking on show in finder displays the folder with all the dng files within.

It appears that @jane-e has moved this to the wrong forum. This is the LightrooM Classic forum, but the question is not about Lightroom Classic.

Try moving some of the images to a direct atteched storage, e.g. a local disk.
There have been some reports that the "Local" fucntion in Lr is having issues with NAS.
If Lr can read and view the files locally, the problem is with the NAS. In which case, any information you provide will likely help Adobe (if they decide) to address the NAS issues.
If Lr has problems with the files being local, then there is an issue with the files. And that can be dug into separately.

I do not have anything Apple (I switched away from Apple a decade ago), so I cannot help debug the issue further. Adobe has posted something about Apple issues recently, and that Adobe is working with Apple. But I did not pay atention to what are the exact issues or even the OS release number.
