P: Convert to DNG

Participant ,

With the release of Lightroom CC, there is a real opportunity here to use DNG as the default format (or at least an option) in Lightroom. If Sensei had the ability to learn from a single file format, I bet it would be a lot easier. Plus, you could bring new value to the format, making it the premiere, if not defacto, RAW image format. Add compression, storage optimization, and more, and get a whole generation shooting in DNG.

I hadn’t considered the ability to convert after import. That would be awesome. With Olympus moving out of the camera space, I’m worried ORF won’t be supported for much longer.

I currently use DNG converter on desktop and then upload. But I’d like to move to a full iPad workflow, and this is stopping me somewhat.

Is there any chance of this going into development?

I'm assuming that since the files themselves are held on Adobe cloud servers, the conversion process of existing library/files can be done there (at great speed!) by allowing the user to ctrl+a to select all in grid view (whether that be at all photos, or in an album), then go to Photo and select a menu option to convert.

Allowing users to "convert to DNG during import" to be available would be useful. Whether it's better to convert locally (longer import, but smaller files to upload) or converting on the servers (less dev time to implement, slower user uploads, faster conversion) could be argued either way.

But allowing users to convert existing files and new files to DNG would be a really nice feature and only help increase the awareness and support of DNG, if that is what Adobe want!

Ne pas rendre une telle option obligatoire s.v.p. je tiens à conserver le format RAW d'origine.

Do not make such a mandatory option s.v.p. I want to keep the original RAW format.

Please consider adding a "Convert to DNG" option in Lightroom CC. This tool was very useful for me in Lightroom Classic and I'd love to have it in Lightroom CC.

FWIW Andrew, I wouldn't worry about ORF's not being supported. I don't think Adobe's ever dropped raw support for old cameras, and if that time ever did come, you could convert to DNG at that point.
