Edit in photoshop option does not work. When selected, photoshop opens but the image will fail to load into photoshop. I have updated all aps and plugins, uninstalled/reinstalled photoshop, logged out and back in to the Adobe creative cloud.
I've been searching to try and find an answer, but can't come up with one. When I send a file to PS from LR CC using the "Edit in Photoshop" command, make my edits, then SAVE and CLOSE, the file does not show back up in LR. What's going on?
OK, after further investigation, it appears that it IS adding them back in LR, however, it's not stacking or putting in the album with the original photo. If I move the edited file to the correct album, and then go and edit it AGAIN in PS, after save and close, the newest file is put in the correct album and stacked, so it has something to do with the orignal file. So, is there a setting somewhere I'm missing?
I have also been been searching for the answer to this exact question. I forever find the answer regarding LrC (Lightroom Classic). There is minimal discussions online about LR (CC, Desktop, Cloud based... whatever people call it these days) I have already discovered comments about possible reasons, like stacking not enabled, or filtered viewing options in LR etc. However, this isn't the case for me. The image that I aedit (which usually consist of duplicating layers to do some high frequency separation work) just does NOT appear in Lightroom at all. Not in the album I came from, not in the entire catalogue either. I find the saved file ends up in a folder called TemporaryEdits in this location: Users/[My username]/Pictures/Lightroom Library.lrlibrary/
Did you discover anything more on this topic, that may help me out?
When I choose "Edit in Photoshop..." from Lightroom, and edit an image in Photoshop and then save, close, and return to Lightroom, the edited image is not appearing in Lightroom.
Here is the process I'm following exactly:
Select image in Lightroom
Choose File > Edit in Photoshop
Perform edits in Photoshop
Choose File > Save or "Command-S"
Close the file
Here is a video of what happens:
When I get back to LR, the image is nowhere to be found. However, I can open it again in Photoshop. It appears under the "Recent" heading on the Photoshop splash screen.
Your video is really helpful. It looks like the image you sent to Photoshop is already a tif file. When you start with a tiff the Photoshop edits would save back into the same file. If you start from a raw file, Photoshop would create a new image during the save. You didn't get a new image because you didn't start with a raw file. When you open the same image back up in Photoshop again, do you see the adjustment layer?
Thank you, I did not consider that. I just tried editing a few RAW/DNG files and some HEIC files (from my iPhone 13). The good news is that the image saved back into Lightroom as expected most of the time. But it still didn't work about 25% of the time—and I'm not doing anything differently in those cases.
Also, I just opened a TIFF file in PS, added an adjustment layer, and saved it. I went back to Lightroom, then selected "Edit in Photoshop" but I did not see the adjustment layer I added. So I don't think this is the issue.
One other thing that may be worth mentioning. I'm in Costa Rica and the internet connection isn't awesome. Not sure if that matters.
If you go back into Photoshop using Edit in and the file is a layered one from Ps, then it should open still with layers unless you did some edits in Lr after it came back from Ps. In that case it would be a flattened file that p[ens in Ps. Might explain your comments on losing layers.
The slow internet connection is most likely causing the issues you see. Lightroom stores your images in the cloud. When you save the edits from Photoshop the file is temporarily saved to your computer, and then it uploads to the cloud in the background. Most likely you don't see the edits because it hasn't finished the upload yet. Leave Lightroom open and give it time to catch up.

I have the same problem, cannot open from Lightroom to photoshop, also have the latest updates. it comes up "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop 2022 could not be launched"
I was thinking about using the LR (instead of the LR Classic) but was frustrated to see that there is no round trip functionality with PS. The problem is exactly as mentioned by Audiotechnical. When I try to save (File > Save) in PS it gives me two options to save on computer or save to cloud - tried both but photo does not end up in LR. Searched the web and youtube but find no anaswers (all dicussions related to LR Classic).
Again if you sue LR on your ipad there is a option to edit in PS and in PS there is a dedicated "send to LR" button, bur no such thing on teh desktop version.
I am back in the U.S. with a solid and fast internet connection. Unfortunately, the problem is still occurring. I just tried doing the round trip with two HEIC files, and in both cases, the edited file with an adjustment layer does not show up anywhere in Lightroom. I can only re-open it by going to the Photoshop splash page.
After each step check to see if PS will launch from Lightroom - do not do all five without checking between each step.
Best steps to take in this order, when faced with this issue:
Verify Camera Raw is up to date
Reset Photoshop Preferences
Remove old installations of Photoshop
Reinstall Photoshop (Current)
Reset Lightroom Preferences
Reinstall Lightroom (Current)
If the above does not restore the expected edit in behavior, then you may need to use Adobe Cleaner Tool to tidy up your Adobe installations and reinstall from scratch. Use this as a last resort.
@Theresa J@Rikk Flohr: Photography How do we get additional support from Adobe on this? My videos make it clear that the Lightroom to Photoshop round trip is not working properly for me, and it seems that a few other people have the same issue.
@Rikk Flohr: Photography You posted these steps as a solution to a different problem than the one I am having. (This thread was merged, which is confusing because the issues are quite different.) The person you replied to cannot open a photo in Photoshop from Lightroom. In my case, the photo opens just fine, but it doesn't save back into Lightroom after edits. Are you suggesting that the steps I should follow are the same?
If so, I will follow these steps. This is a brand new 14" MacBook Pro, so I don't have any old installations of Adobe products to "tidy up".
First, I resetted Photoshop preferences. The first time I tried a "round trip" (opening in PS, editing, and saving back to LR), it worked. But the second time, it didn't.
I had no old installations of PS, so the next thing I did was to reinstall PS. Again, the round trip worked the first time, but the second time it didn't. I tried a few more times and it worked about 50% of the time.
Then I resetted LR preferences. Same story. The first round trip worked, the second didn't, and after multiple tries I'd say my success rate was about 50%.
I'm now about to reinstall Lightroom. But it seems very strange to me that this is working some of the time, but not all of the time. I'm not sure how to account for that.
I have now completed all of the steps except using the Adobe Cleaner Tool. The good news is that the "round trip" is working about 80% of the time. The bad news is that it's still not working 20% of the time, and I have no idea why that is. I haven't seen any discernible reason (file type, what edits I make in PS, etc.) that determine when it doesn't work.
Before I consider using the Adobe Cleaner Tool as a last resort, I'd like to understand what that will do that uninstalling/reinstalling PS and LR and deleting the preferences didn't already do. Thanks.
I just did 8 Photoshop round trips. 5 of them worked, 3 of them failed.
Can I live with this? Yes. But clearly something is not working as it should, and I'd prefer to solve the problem.
I'm preparing to use the Adobe Cleaner Tool, but since that is a pretty big undertaking, I wanted to check to see if there's anything else that I should investigate or try first.
I have now gone through the entire list that @Rikk Flohr: Photography provided, including using Adobe Cleaner Tool to completely remove all Adobe apps, and then reinstall.
The Photoshop round trip is working about 80% of the time now. I can't find a consistent pattern for when it doesn't work, but I've noticed that it is more likely to fail when the image has multiple layers.
To reiterate, when I say "fail", I mean that the edited image in Photoshop does not appear in Lightroom. The only way that I can re-open the edited image is from the Photoshop start/splash screen (the screen that appears when you close all open files in PS).
Where do I go from here? Should I call the Adobe support number?
Lately I've been having problem to transfer pictures to Photoshop from Lightroom. I already removed and re-installed both programs, but the issue's still happening. After selecting "Edit on Photoshop", the Lightroom takes to load and finish by saying: "Fail on editing on photoshop, could not open photoshop". Any ideas on how to solve it?
