I have been facing the same problem, on the Windows 10 machine. I have another Windows 11 machine, same versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, where the problem doesn't happen. On the Windows 10 machine I've already followed several steps that have been reported, but the problem persists and I think we'll have to wait for Adobe to fix the defect.

Try the following steps in the exact order.

After each step check to see if PS will launch from Lightroom - do not do all five without checking between each step.

Best steps to take in this order, when faced with this issue:

  1. Verify Camera Raw is up to date
  2. Reset Photoshop Preferences
  3.  Remove old installations of Photoshop
  4.  Reinstall Photoshop (Current)
  5.  Reset Lightroom Preferences
  6.  Reinstall Lightroom (Current)

If the above does not restore the expected edit in behavior, then you may need to use Adobe Cleaner Tool to tidy up your Adobe installations and reinstall from scratch. Use this as a last resort.

Additionally you can follow the issue at the Photoshop Thread Here.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography You posted these steps as a solution to a different problem than the one I am having. (This thread was merged, which is confusing because the issues are quite different.) The person you replied to cannot open a photo in Photoshop from Lightroom. In my case, the photo opens just fine, but it doesn't save back into Lightroom after edits. Are you suggesting that the steps I should follow are the same?

If so, I will follow these steps. This is a brand new 14" MacBook Pro, so I don't have any old installations of Adobe products to "tidy up".

If:

Lightroom Desktop fails to open Photoshop

or

Lightroom Desktop launches Photoshop and the image failes to load

or

You close Photoshop and the finished image fails to return

these are the correct steps to follow to correct the issue.

I just did 8 Photoshop round trips. 5 of them worked, 3 of them failed.

Can I live with this? Yes. But clearly something is not working as it should, and I'd prefer to solve the problem.

I'm preparing to use the Adobe Cleaner Tool, but since that is a pretty big undertaking, I wanted to check to see if there's anything else that I should investigate or try first.

Update:

First, I resetted Photoshop preferences. The first time I tried a "round trip" (opening in PS, editing, and saving back to LR), it worked. But the second time, it didn't.

I had no old installations of PS, so the next thing I did was to reinstall PS. Again, the round trip worked the first time, but the second time it didn't. I tried a few more times and it worked about 50% of the time.

Then I resetted LR preferences. Same story. The first round trip worked, the second didn't, and after multiple tries I'd say my success rate was about 50%.

I'm now about to reinstall Lightroom. But it seems very strange to me that this is working some of the time, but not all of the time. I'm not sure how to account for that.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography

I have now completed all of the steps except using the Adobe Cleaner Tool. The good news is that the "round trip" is working about 80% of the time. The bad news is that it's still not working 20% of the time, and I have no idea why that is. I haven't seen any discernible reason (file type, what edits I make in PS, etc.) that determine when it doesn't work.

Before I consider using the Adobe Cleaner Tool as a last resort, I'd like to understand what that will do that uninstalling/reinstalling PS and LR and deleting the preferences didn't already do. Thanks.

Another update.

I have now gone through the entire list that @Rikk Flohr: Photography provided, including using Adobe Cleaner Tool to completely remove all Adobe apps, and then reinstall.

The Photoshop round trip is working about 80% of the time now. I can't find a consistent pattern for when it doesn't work, but I've noticed that it is more likely to fail when the image has multiple layers.

To reiterate, when I say "fail", I mean that the edited image in Photoshop does not appear in Lightroom. The only way that I can re-open the edited image is from the Photoshop start/splash screen (the screen that appears when you close all open files in PS).

Where do I go from here? Should I call the Adobe support number?

Ok, a final update before I call Adobe.

I installed Lightroom Classic on my MacBook Pro with the intention of determining whether the “round trip” issue is being caused by Lightroom (cloud version) or Photoshop.

The “round trip” worked flawlessly 10 times in a row, with 10 different photos, using Lightroom Classic.

This tells me the problem is with Lightroom (cloud version), not Photoshop.

Good news. I spent over an hour on a chat this morning with an Adobe support tech. He did a remote session and made a few changes:

  • Changed permissions to "read-write" for the Adobe folder in Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support
  • Ticked the "Enable Legacy 'Save as...'" box in Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling
  • Changed the name of the Camera Raw folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe, then reinstalled Camera Raw

One of those changes (not sure which one) seems to have fixed the problem. I just did 12 round trips and it worked every time. I'm still reluctant to call it solved, since it has been intermittent. But I've never done 12 in a row without a failure, so this is encouraging.

When I choose "Edit in Photoshop..." from Lightroom, and edit an image in Photoshop and then save, close, and return to Lightroom, the edited image is not appearing in Lightroom.

Here is the process I'm following exactly:

  1. Select image in Lightroom
  2. Choose File > Edit in Photoshop
  3. Perform edits in Photoshop
  4. Choose File > Save or "Command-S"
  5. Close the file

Here is a video of what happens:

When I get back to LR, the image is nowhere to be found. However, I can open it again in Photoshop. It appears under the "Recent" heading on the Photoshop splash screen.

Any ideas?

Your video is really helpful. It looks like the image you sent to Photoshop is already a tif file. When you start with a tiff the Photoshop edits would save back into the same file. If you start from a raw file, Photoshop would create a new image during the save. You didn't get a new image because you didn't start with a raw file. When you open the same image back up in Photoshop again, do you see the adjustment layer?

Thank you, I did not consider that. I just tried editing a few RAW/DNG files and some HEIC files (from my iPhone 13). The good news is that the image saved back into Lightroom as expected most of the time. But it still didn't work about 25% of the time—and I'm not doing anything differently in those cases.

Also, I just opened a TIFF file in PS, added an adjustment layer, and saved it. I went back to Lightroom, then selected "Edit in Photoshop" but I did not see the adjustment layer I added. So I don't think this is the issue.

One other thing that may be worth mentioning. I'm in Costa Rica and the internet connection isn't awesome. Not sure if that matters.

If you go back into Photoshop using Edit in and the file is a layered one from Ps, then it should open still with layers unless you did some edits in Lr after it came back from Ps. In that case it would be a flattened file that p[ens in Ps. Might explain your comments on losing layers.

The slow internet connection is most likely causing the issues you see. Lightroom stores your images in the cloud. When you save the edits from Photoshop the file is temporarily saved to your computer, and then it uploads to the cloud in the background. Most likely you don't see the edits because it hasn't finished the upload yet. Leave Lightroom open and give it time to catch up.

I am back in the U.S. with a solid and fast internet connection. Unfortunately, the problem is still occurring. I just tried doing the round trip with two HEIC files, and in both cases, the edited file with an adjustment layer does not show up anywhere in Lightroom. I can only re-open it by going to the Photoshop splash page.

Here's another video showing this:

@Theresa J @Rikk Flohr: Photography How do we get additional support from Adobe on this? My videos make it clear that the Lightroom to Photoshop round trip is not working properly for me, and it seems that a few other people have the same issue.

I've been searching to try and find an answer, but can't come up with one. When I send a file to PS from LR CC using the "Edit in Photoshop" command, make my edits, then SAVE and CLOSE, the file does not show back up in LR. What's going on?
