Photoshop Lightroom 4.1 mac - unable to add people tags

I am using the auto people tagging feature and it works remarkably well. However, a large number of photos are recognizing the presence of only ONE face/person when there are 2-3 obvious faces/people. Or only two faces when there are 3 or 4.

To be clear, the issue is not that the facial recognizition isn't working accurately. It's that it's not even detecting ANY faces/people where faces are clearly visible...eg: portrait of two people staring right at camera -- LR only sees ONE person...

I have followed all the available advice on how to view a picture, click on Tags, and then "add" the names of any unidentified people. HOWEVER, this only works if LR presents a people "box" that I can use to tag with a name.

the problem is that in many cases, although there are several very obvious faces, it doesn't offer the option of adding a BOX which can then be tagged. CAN A "PEOPLE" BOX BE ADDED SOMEHOW?

I'm preparing for an important family slideshow so any insight would be appreciated!  thank you!
