"select sky" - how do I apply the mask to the photo?

Hi,

I am completely new to Lightroom. I tried to adjust the colour of the sky in one of my photos using the masking tool "select sky". I can easily see the adjustments when I click the mask, but when I return to the album, the adjustments do not show through. What do I do wrong?

If the Masking tool is not open, can you still see the adjustments? 

And is Lightroom still busy syncing (shown on the cloud icon in the top right corner)?
