"Set as Cover Photo" uses wrong area for thumbnail in people view

I have some photos synced from Lightroom Classic CC with smart previews only stored in the cloud. After the most recent update, when I do "Set as Cover Photo" in people view, the spot diagonally opposite from the bounding box usually becomes the thumbnail for the person. That is, if the image was rotated 180 degrees but the bounding box stayed put.

Has anyone else run across this, and if so, know of any workarounds?

An interesting workaround: flip the image horizontally, set it as the cover photo, then flip it back. The cover photo will be a mirror image of what it should be, but at least it's of the person's face.
