Resolution/ppi effect on photographs

If I'm not going to print my photographs does the resolution/ppi settings affect the quality of them, the way they are displayed or any other aspect of them. If yes, what should my ppi be.

Also why everyone suggests 72ppi for web use. If you dont choose that are they going to be projected too big/small?

The ppi flag in image export is only used to calculate the size in pixels if you specify the size in inches or cm. If you specify the size in pixels, it is just a metadata flag that is not used almost anywhere and indeed does not affect the quality of the image exported. 

So if you're exporting and say you specify I want a 6 inch image at the long dimension at 300 ppi, you will get an image that is 1800 pixels long. Specifying 200 ppi would make it only 1200 pixels long so yeah then it does affect the quality.
