I currently have >40,000 photos in my Lightroom catelog which goes back more than 10 years. I would like to use a second laptop to manage and edit selective photos starting from a certain time period, i.e 2015 and forward. From what I understand, it is not possible to hide folder in Lightroom 4.1 (not the classic version). If that is the case, is it possible to create two different catalogs of photos and only display one of those on the second laptop? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you mean the old LR 4.1 (about a decade old now), you can create a second catalog by selecting the desired photos and then File->Export as Catalog.
If you are talking about the new cloud-based LR 4.1, you are in the wrong forum.

If you are referring to Lightroom 4.1 then I assume you're referring to Lightroom cloudy, the so-called new Lightroom that stores images in the cloud. The short answer is that you cannot create a second catalog for that version.

Yes, I am referring to the new cloud based Lightroom.
Since I cannot split the catalog or hide folders, I guess the alternative would be to: 1) export all photos prior a certain date, 2) delete the old photos from the new Lightroom, 3) import the older pictures into Lightroom Classic. Very cumbersome but I guess it would work?

I still suggest you post your question in the proper forum, which is the Lightroom forum (you are not in the Lightroom forum, you are in the Lightroom Classic forum).

Transitioning from Lightroom to Lightroom Classic is not something that I am comfortable giving advice on. I play around with Lightroom a little, but Lightroom Classic is my choice for doing my work. If you post your question in the Lightroom forum there are specialists there who will probably have good suggestions as to how best to make the switch.
