Lightroom CC and Keywords.
It appears that the CC version only has limited support for keywords. For those of us who have spent years collecting or building controlled vocabularies, this would be a critical requirement and is a potential game-changer in respect of migrating to the CC version. Dealing with 10,000 bird species in a variety of languages including scientific binomials ain't going to be fun in a flat keyword list. I recognise that for people who only want 'blue', 'sky', 'holiday' this won't be important, but for digital asset management it is pretty up there.
Support for a continuation of hierarchical controlled vocabularies would be much appreciated.

Second that. Keywording is a definite game changer for me. Together with the latest directions taken by Lightroom CC moving everything into the cloud including all bugs in new software versions, I'm now considering putting serious effort into learning an entirely new photo platform and adapting my workflow accordingly.

My keyword list is probably not THAT deep, but not being able to migrate existing keywords is a major roadblock.

I would like to see a list of existing keywords to click on to add.  Also - "Music" and "music" should be the same keyword. so frustrating.

What would be a good workflow for using keywords in Lightroom CC?  I've used Lightroom 5 for a little while, and I see you can add a hierarchical list of keywords which you can select from when going through images.  But I can't find this feature in LR CC.  So how would you add keywords like location, person name (first and last name), atmosphere, etc.?

In Lightroom CC v1.1, having added values for City, State / Province, and Country fields, when I look to filter by the Locations dropdown, I get a flat list of available values sorted in descending alphabetical order. Similar to this:

Canada
Greater London
London
Ontario
Toronto
United Kingdom

Given that these values are either in the City, State / Province, or Country field, it would be far more intuitive and easier to use if it was display like:

Canada
-- Ontario
-- -- Toronto

United Kingdom
-- Greater London
-- -- London

In addition, it would also be useful if the Locations filter also:

1) Showed how many photos matched each value at each level
2) Showed how many photos did not have any values at any level

Hope that helps!

I hope Adobe addresses these problems quickly. Not conforming the functioning of keywords and commenting across Classic, CC and CC mobile versions is a huge blunder! Lightroom CC desktop is absolutely useless without syncing keywords and adding comments.

I would add my support for this feature request. In the end I believe Adobe should not allow Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC to diverge in such a fundamental area. One of Lightroom's strengths has always been its database - and the many ways to get to the relevant photo. A cut down version in Lightroom CC does not play to this strength. In addition the inability to add keywords in CC and sync them to classic is a problem in many workflows.

It is really important to us to export keywords into Creative Cloud. It should be a standard feature!

Yes please, subfolders for keywords would be helpful (not even just for the serious professionals like MIke, but also for those of us who are just hobbyists who just use it for family & travel photos etc).

Also i TOTALLY agree with Jess about having the existing keywords to click on - it's so annoying having to type in a long winded keyword EVERY time - even just long names like Rebecca or Brisbane.. like really, in this day and age of doing everything on our phones, why would we want to type and retype those words all the time?  And like Jess says, it's annoying to have two keycodes created for the same word.

I fully support what clarijoh  said above:

I'll add - one of the major reasons for me moving fully away from Capture One was their poor implementation of a real database; and key words are integral to a db.

I would like this mostly because of not being able to sync keywords between my Lightroom Classic desktop, and pre-selecting/tagging synced photos on my ipad on Lightroom Mobile on the go.

I can only flag and rate them (and do some adjustments), but I can't apply colours, and I can't do any keywording (and have it transfer back to Lightroom Classic). I know of the technical reasons behind that (flat vs hierarchical), so if that really is the main limitation preventing fully functional keyword syncing, then please streamline that...

The Classic app is for different audiences than the CC app, that's all fine by me, but Classic users also have mobile parts of their workflow and a part of that is just not functional because you decided to link Mobile with one but not the other.

This deficiency makes LR CC a eunuch.

It's hard to believe something as fundamental as keywords doesn't work between CC and Classic.  I literally just set up to use Lightroom CC for the sole purpose of working on keywords when I had spare time.  I only found this forum once I started trying to figure out why my keywords weren't syncing.  Shame on Adobe for pushing out CC before it could perform the most basic functions.

this is terrible. First of all because Lightroom CC isnt' able to replace Lightroom classic.
In addition i can't believe that sync keyword is a so difficult addition

The ability to sync keywords between the CC and Classic versions of LR is FUNDAMENTAL! I can't believe that this product was released with such a major flaw. I read one "official" comment that Classic and CC are addressing different markets. If that is the case then those of us who use the Classic version with CC mobile for remote working MUST have assurance from Adobe that this omission will be resolved and that the Classic version has an ongoing long-term development plan.

The lack of assurance from Adobe actually sends out the message to Classic users that they don't care about them.

I agree this is a fundamental issue. I use the two Lightrooms together and keep a close eye and understanding on the syncing behaviour. Honestly I'm okay waiting for the product to mature and I know that the transition is not ready for everyone - that includes me.

I just cannot imagine a world where the new Lightroom CC doesn't support Hierarchical Keywords and the syncing (or even a one time migration) from Classic. It makes me nervous to think that this data I've put a lot of work into has no future at Adobe. Tell me it's on a road map and I'll patiently wait.

Possibly true but I can't believe that existing Lightroom users who value the Classic features don't make up a significant proportion of the user base. If that is the case then Adobe should at least be giving us a roadmap so that we have some reassurance about the future.

I concur with all the previous comment on this topic. Key wording is a fundemental tool for organising & locating images. I have +30k digital images collected over +15yrs and keywording is an essential part of my workflow.

I find the new lightroom cc on my iPad to be a very useful application for making initial edits, picking, rating & deleting images. The application synchronises these selections seamlessly with lightroom classic on my desktop. The one thing that is missing is the limited support for key wording between these application. Please consider reinstating full keyword support between lightroom cc & lightroom classic.

I cannot tell (whoever, if anyone, at Adobe, is listening, or) you that this issue seriously screws with my workflow. Yes, I know all the stupid reasons for this (and you’d be angry too at this point after dealing with Adobe’s HORRIBLE customer support for the past forty-eight hours), but there has GOT to be a way to combine the features of Lightroom Classic that I need and rely on with the ability to sync keywords that only seems to happen in Lightroom CC. I am a photographer who has worked with Adobe products for more than two decades and this is driving me insane!

Consider Mylio. I believe it can synch flat keywords back and forth, and it works with Classic. Not so hot with DNGs for some reason, but worth looking at if you need to synch with a mobile device as it has far more control than CC.

Being able to add/edit keywords to photos in my Lightroom Classic through the web platform will be a huge game-changer for me and it's totally illogical for me as a consumer why this functionality is not already there. I strongly support work to be done in that area.

Working in Classic and CC with Collections synchronised without this functionality is a bis problem for me too. Should I use the CC in a tablet to edit the pictures and then go back to the computer to add the keywords on the same image??? pretty annoying besides illogical. Please add this functionality.

Even being able to sync flat keywords from new photos would be a massive improvement over what Lightroom syncs now (nothing).

The workaround I use is I tag my images from my phone and then I can call them with the filter and put the needed metadata on the whole group of photos. It's not keywords, but it's a synchronizable field, so it works for that.
