Lightroom online gallery looks like a useful tool for me at the moment but I will need the image numbers to display in the gallery view or it renders the whole thing useless.

As you're looking to display Image titles on images in the Lighroom Web gallery view, as of now it is not possible. However it seems like a great idea and I would request you to share it here: Feature Request/Bug Report Form so that our engineers can look into adding it in the future.
