Lightroom CC abysmal performance on 2017 iMac

One of the things I loved about Apple's Aperture (and all of Apple's photo solutions) was how effortlessly they handled large photo libraries. Performance was always smooth, even with large numbers of RAWs, even on consumer models like the earlier iMacs.

Lightroom CC, which I guess Apple recommends as a replacement for the unfortunately discontinued Aperture, doesn't perform well at all. Editing a single image works well enough, but scrolling through my library in grid view is horribly slow.

Most interface actions outside of Detail View take at least a second, or several seconds, to feedback on the screen. Even switching to Lightroom from another app takes seconds to respond. No other apps I use seem to have this problem, even other pro apps like Logic Pro, Pixelmator, Adobe's own Photoshop... they all have great performance on my iMac.

My question is, is this something I can fix with a particular setting? (There actually aren't many settings available in Lightroom...) Or is this just a faulty app in general? Can I fix it by deleting preferences or any such thing?

So far, I've tried reinstalling Lightroom. I also tried migrating to the latest version of Lightroom Classic with local storage. The interface performance improves a little, but scrolling and everything else is not much improved. I've tried increasing my local photo cache space. No change.

I've tried force-building Smart Previews and storing them locally. No change. I also bought more RAM for the Mac. No change.

I would really appreciate some help here. Also, it's rather confusing to find anything on these forum pages, if you aren't a regular user.

Thanks.

You and me both, has me baffled but we're not alone.

I have a 2017 MBP 15" with 16gb RAM LR Classic CC was at time unusable, LightroomCC is better BUT the second you use DeHaze on anything it all but grinds to a halt, hence why I just use it at the very end.

I think the issue is Adobe aren't optimizing their code for Mac.

Also Lightroom CC being a version 1 product basically has no settings so I say just wait, sadly the LR CC updates are really slow.

Also have you upgraded to Mojave ? I'm doing this soon be interesting to see if it makes any difference.

I used Lightroom on High Sierra and now I have updated to Mojave. But there is no difference I can discern. If anything, it's maybe running a little worse. Also, I had 8 GB of RAM and thought maybe that's the problem. Now I have 24 GB and it didn't speed up at all. Really strange, very un-maclike performance.

I'm done with this nonsense. I now decided to try the Photos app built-in to macOS as a catalog solution. It has a round-trip function to external editors, so I can still use Photoshop for editing.

itks funny that you can find many people on here that think just the opposite - that Adobe only optimizes on Macs and forgets about Windows and that is why performance on Windows is so slow.

Most likely both is true... they are trying to save time and money developing for two incompatible platforms. So on both platforms, it's not going to run very well. It's similar to the problems with Java — write once, sucks everywhere.

Funny, I've read in various places they've dropped the ball on their Mac coding and their windows coding is better.

Whichever way it's rubbish excuses and for a product you're paying a monthly subscription for is inexcusable.

The performance issues on Mac shouldn't in theory even be happening since it's a rather homogenous eco system compared to Windows

I can confirm thumbnail scrolling went from super fast in Mac OS High Sierra to super slow on Mac OS Mojave. 2013 Mac Pro with 2560 x 1440 Display and dual AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB. Had to revert to Mac OS High Sierra.

I have been testing Lightroom CC again and I also find it impossibly slow on my iMac. I have less than 500 photos imported to the new CC program and the scrolling & general performance is awful. It has been the same on High Sierra & now Mojave. Classic is a little bit better but I need a cloud Library. No way I can import my entire Library into new CC. Lightroom CC on iOS works great, but I need it to work great on my Mac.

My iMac is a fully loaded Late 2015 27" iMac, 4.0 GHz Quad Core, 32 GB Ram, SSD. It is sad Lightroom is almost unusable on this machine.

Adobe, what is going on here? Are you trying to lose customers?

I just wanted to chime in here too. I had been using macOS High Sierra and performance of the latest 1.x was... okay. Not great but usable. I've since upgraded to macOS Mojave and Lightroom CC 2.0 and it is frankly usable. Scrolling and general UI interaction is an exercise in frustration. So many beach balls. Jerky scrolling is a kind term for what I am seeing. If I scroll a 61 photo album it pauses, beach balls, then jumps to where the scroll stopped. I really regret migrating from LR Classic at this point.

I really love the idea of the new Lightroom but when every client *but* the desktop works and performs wonderfully I get a bit disheartened. I really hope that performance improvements on the Mac are at the top of the priority list.

I am mainly running on an 8 core Mac Pro (2013) with 64 GB of ram, but see similar performance issues on my 2018 MacBook Pro with 32 GB of ram.

Hi,

Same problem here. I have an iMac 2017 5K and the LR performance is poor and unacceptable.

I've made the latest CC updates and i'm running Mojave 10.14.1

I also have a Radeon 580 8gb which is the fastest graphic card for the iMac and 32gb RAM !

I'm running fusion drive on APFS and my catalog is this drive, not on an external one.

I also disabled automatic writing to XMP

Library scrolling is painfully slow, beach balls very often, and terribly laggy.

develop is a bit better but LR seems to be working hard when changing a slider (even with XMP disabled) since I see the turning grey dots on the bottom right almost constantly.

What's happening Adobe ???

I have a high end Apple config, LR (an the catalog) is optimized, but there is awful performance.

Please fix LR for the Mac !!!!

That must be for Lightroom Classic then as you cannot explicitly store originals WITH xmps with the new clouds sedan LRCC.

Just to add another voice with the same problem. My iMac Pro is 2017, 3 GHz Xeon W 10 cores, 64 GB, Pro Vega 64. Shoulkd be fast as lightning, but when working with Lightroom Classic or Bridge I feel set back in the 60ties working with an abacus ...

Chiming in here to see if any more information can come from Adobe? Lightroom is in desperate need of a huge performance increase -

I would be somewhat happy if I can just scroll smoothly. Apple Photos can do this, Luminar 3 can do this, Lightroom CC on iOS can do this.

I was super excited when I got my CC subscription a few years ago and learned how Lightroom worked and the organization and everything, but was immediately disappointed after I imported my photo library (I use dropbox, not apple for my photos so I had no prior catalog or editor besides PS).

Performance was insanely bad.  I was ready to go aND quickly sort through a good chunk of my photos with the maps view but performance on it was identical, worse actually, than a 1991 smith-corona word processor I bought just for fun.  The word processor had to slowly redraw the whole screen every time you edited something but lightroom has even more lag than that.

I gave up on it, occasionally checked back after updates, assumed it was my older MBP, kept reading more and more and saw the same complaints from new mac pro/imac pro owners with maxed out ram, burly GPUs/CPUs and nothing but confirmation that lightroom is horrendously slow and worse with every update.

100% not using the new cloud based one so I guess that leaves me looking for alternatives while I continue to pay $53 per month for the few apps I can use (illustrator, photoshop, after effects, premiere pro).

Adobe thinks they are too big to fail apparently and that may be true, but its very frustrating and disappointing.

The performance everyone here is experiencing is unacceptable, especially taking into account the min specs Adobe is calling for.

--Multi Core CPU

--4 GB Ram (8GB recommended)

--2GB Harddrive

--1 GB Video RAM (VRAM). 2 GB of dedicated VRAM (4 GB recommended) for 4k & 5k monitors

I cannot remotely image Lightroom on a min spec'd machine. My quad-core 4 ghz i7, 32GB RAM, SSD, 4GB VRAM runs like garbage. This is with a test library with under 200 photos.

With slow performance the questions are always:

  • How large are your raw files? If you are dealing with 40+ MP raw files, you will need a beefy machine. If you have 24 MP files predominantly, even a 2012 Mac Book Pro will do fine. I have this machine and this is the breakup. I need my much faster 2018 MBP for the files from the high MP camera. It is frustrating on the old machine but more normal file sizes are just fine on the older machine.
  • How much free space do you have on your startup disk? If it is any lower than 100GB, free up space on this disk. SSD drives need to be at least >25% but ideally >50% free to perform well.
  • Are you running any antivirus software? Many AV packages slow down Lightroom to molasses speed. If you run any of this, make sure you exclude the Lightroom catalog/library file(s) and the preview databases from scanning, otherwise the catalog will get rescanned every time you make a single change.
  • If running Classic, are the previews in your catalog set to the correct size for your display? Usually this is the Auto setting.
  • Do you have sufficient bandwidth? Lightroom CC needs to download and upload raw files which will easily completely max out your connection even to the point that when it is uploading in the background and if your router is not smart, it can make everything else glacial. Many home routers are not smart enough to do this right and balance traffic. Worse, many people's internet connections are strongly asymmetric with very small upload bandwidth (5 Mbps is typical). Lightroom CC will easily saturate this and again with typical routers, your download traffic will stall when that happens which can adversely impact scrolling and editing in Lightroom. It can be a good idea to invest in a good quality router that load balances or does QoS or to have a cable modem (if you have cable internet) that has enough channels (the root cause for the slowdowns if your upload bandwidth is saturated).
  • Are you running any firewall software? Lightroom CC is very sensitive to this and can show stalls and slowdowns with aggressive firewalls.
  • Do you do a lot of brushing and/or cloning on your images? This is the one thing that will slow down everything considerably, especially if you also enable lens corrections and upright corrections.

I am typing this in a 2012 13" MBP that does run antivirus software, has 16GB internal memory and an older built in Intel video card with just 1GB of VRAM. It works just fine with Lightroom CC and Classic (I use both alongside each other) as long as I don't want to edit a whole bunch of images from my Z7. Doing edits on files from my older cameras is great. My 2018 tricked out MBP works great with the Z7 files or with giant panoramas assembled from those or my older cameras.  I do agree that the minimum requirements Adobe gives are completely laughable. I can't imagine the experience on a machine like that being even close to acceptable with raw files from reasonably current cameras. I would say the minimum reasonable amount of RAM is 16 GB (although I have seen Lightroom run fine on 8GB machines) and an internal SSD of at least 500GB that is 50% empty.

It is mystifying why some people with super beefy machines get such bad performance. That's not been my experience but Adobe should really figure out why some people have glacial performance.

Hey, I am following this, as it is the most recent thread I can find on the matter. I am currently running Bridge CC, PS CC and LR CC Classic (not necessarily at the same time). My 2010 MacBook (not pro) is officially obsolete from OS update perspective and I am in the market for a good used/refurbished one. I am including a photo (at right) of what I have now and below I am posting info on, roughly, what I am looking to get. What are anyone's thoughts, as these threads are scaring me a bit. I currently use a Canon 5DIII and edit RAW and JPG files. No video and no LR CC Cloud. Thanks!

OS info.jpg

I want to go to something more like this in a minimum 2015 (but likely '16 or '17):

  • iMac
  • Display Size: 21.5"
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 3GHz
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 1TB HDD
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 555

This is a user-to-user forum and very few Adobe employees hang out here and Adobe very seldomly comments here. The official feedback and bug report forum is at https://feedback.photoshop.com . The same login as here works there. That forum is actually monitored by engineers and they will report if they can reproduce the issue and whether it will be fixed in the next release there.

When I colorgrade a 4k raw image in lightroom on my 2017 imac, the program uses up to 500% of my cpu to get the job done. That is unacceptable.

My specs:

iMac2017 5K

4,2 gHz i/

4gb ram

Radeon 580 8gb

I mostly work with video and premiere isn't much better. I'm switching to Davinci Resolve. Free of charge and runs smooth without taking up more than all of the computing power.

I have a 21.5" iMac 4K 3.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and 8GB of RAM. My RAW files are large, 80+ megabytes each. Performance in complex tasks like panoramic stitching was abysmal, up to 45 minutes.

I just upgraded from 8 to 32GB of RAM and same stitching is done in less than 2 minutes.

Adobe should stop stating that 4 GB is minimal and 8 is recommended.

Imac pro with 32GB ram and the same issue... this is very annoying, i deliberately bought a Imac pro for foto editing and now the software is running unexpected abysmally. Hope Adobe will correct this in near future
