Breakpoint Placement: On Master Page or Not?

Is there a definitive answer on whether it is best to place your breakpoints on a Master page, or a non-Master (regular) page? Or is it best to have the same breakpoints on BOTH?

I can see when you place a breakpoint on a Master page, you get little indicator arrows on your regular pages. But this doesn't seem to work the other way around (placing a breakpoint on a regular page does not produce arrow indicators on a Master page).

I am confused!

Thanks-

Why confused? Breakpoint on master and layout pages don’t necessarily have to be the same or at the same place. Master page elements may use different breakpoint as layout pages do. Think of a master page with 4 images in a row, which need to be re-arranged breakpoint-wise, while the layout page only has a text frame, which doesn’t need additional breakpoints at all.

  • If needed, you can carry over master page breakpoint to layout pages by clicking onto the small triangles on the breakpoint bar on your layout page and click onto the appearing „+“ icon.
  • You can carry over master page breakpoints to layout pages by copying a arbitrary master page element and pasting it onto a layout page by using menu „Edit/Paste and Create Breakpoints“. This works the other way round (from layout page to master page) too.
