How to access .htaccess file

Hi there, I'm sure similar questions have been asked before but I just can't seem to find an answer.

I have the code to take the /index.html off my urls but have no idea what a htaccess file is, how to get it, how to edit it etc.

Also I have never coded a thing in my life, if someone is willing to help I would appreciate if you could explain how to do this, and do so in the simplest way possible..imagine I am a toddler who doesn't have a great grasp of English.
