I want a video background to autoplay with sound.
I'm under the impression that in order to autoplay video a "muted" attribute must be added, but is this not tragically backwards?
Is there really no longer any way to autoplay the sound of video?

What do you mean with that?
Placing a video, stretching it to browser width doesn’t prevent the sound to be played.

The video sound needs to auto*play though.
Are you able to embed a video that automatically plays sound? (without any user interaction i.e. pressing Play or clicking)

Yes, of course this is possible. But autoplay isn‘t supported by most browsers on mobile devices.

How?

By simply using the built in video widgets And checking “Autoplay“.

Are you referring to the Social Widgets i.e. youtube, vimeo, etc.?
(because I'm trying to embed an .mp4 that isn't connected to social platforms.)
Otherwise, I see no such "built in video widgets"

Perhaps it would be a good idea, to tell us this in the beginning.
In this case, follow this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5laJaqwunI
or this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbTw-RajzOg (links in the youTube comments)

Neither of those actually work.
You'll notice that in the first video (5:09) he adds "muted" to his attributes to make it work. Though the narrator makes the excuse that the attribute is only for user experience, it doesn't work without this attribute.
That's my issue.

No. He adds „muted“ to mute the sound — what you obviously don‘t want.

Why doesn't it work without adding "muted" then?

You must be using Safari. Try with another browser that does not have autoplay disabled.
Out of respect for people who find autoplay with audio very annoying, the feature is not supported by all devices. And you will find that most people prefer autoplay disabling user preferences and add-ons which you as a web designer cannot control.
You can have video & sound on your site as long as you give people a player with controls to turn audio on/off.
