Is it OK just to let everything drop into one Layer or is it advisable to put different sections of a web site

into different layers.

To add to HMAM​, you then can easily detect by colors, if elements are in the right spot/layer. This could get interesting when something doesn`t "work" as expected.

It is quite useful to have elements from the "master" in a separate layer. Mostly designers want to have certain elements on top of everything else, footer and header especially. Now it is good practice to have nothing else in this layer on all pages as this could lead to unpredictable behaviour. Not all breakpoints from pages are necessary on masters.

To contradict HMAM and fotoroeder a little bit :

• Layer are not tied to a single page. Layer work – and have to work – site wide, not page-wide. You may follow HMAM’s advice, but you have to keep in mind, that elements, which need a specific place in the stcking order should be placed in a layer of its own.
• It doesn’t make sense in every case, to „have elements from the master in a separate layer“, because individual master page elements can (and very often have to) be placed in a specific position of the stacking order, not only on top or at the bottom.

I agree with Günter.

If you create a separate layer for each page, there will be no order and convenience. If you have a large site you will create 100500 layers and get lost in them.

The same layer can be reused on different pages. Therefore, it makes sense to create layers in the following form.

• Anchors
• Top menu
• Header
• First screen
• Second screen
• ..... screen
• Footer
• Background
• Scripts.

This may vary depending on your project. But the idea remains the same - you separate the content of one page by layers and use these layers on other pages. If the layer is filled on one page, then this layer will be empty on another page, and you can use it again. Thus, even a large site will fit 5-10 layers and you will get full control.

And I agree with Uwe . Sometimes for master page elements you need a separate layer, for example Top menu and Footer
