Refine edge

I am using Windows 10, 64-bit. When I use select and mask; select subject, the program will not allow me to use the refine edge tool. Nor the brush tool. I have no problem with this in the full version of Photoshop. 

Is it me or the program?

Won’t allow me means that the brushes are unclickable. The cursor does not change from the pointer and it will not select or refine the edge.

I don't know how I inadvertantly put 'correct answer' to the question earth oliver asked, but it is there.

Has anyone told Adobe that the worst place to get any help with Photoshop or any other creative plan is Adobe? 

How is this still unanswered and how is it there is no way to contact Adobe to get it fixed or answered?
