a few layers on the bottom, below the smart object that I brought into edit mode for a moment, had disappeared from the layers palette after I saved the edit and returned to the full-screen mode. it's about 3 or 4 pixel layers, although they still show up in the file. i'm saving the file as a new version, then restart PS and see if the layers are still in the PSD file (the newly and the original files)
