Annoying lag when typing file names when saving in Photoshop

Explorer ,
Apr 13, 2025 Apr 13, 2025

Whenever I go to save a file in Photoshop, once the explorer pops up where I can type in the filename to save, Photoshop starts lagging to the point where the file name you type is delayed showing up on screen. It is incredibly annoying. This has been occuring over the past year+.  This happens even with simple and small images. It happens no matter if I use Save, Save As, or Save a Copy. Why is this occuring?

Hi @ TheYeager, Let's try to troubleshoot this! Here are some steps you can try that often help speed things up that cover both Photoshop settings and some general system tips:

  1. Update Photoshop: Make sure you're using the latest version. Adobe frequently releases updates with performance improvements and bug fixes. Go to Help > Updates to check for and install any available updates.

  2. Optimize Preferences: Go to Edit > Preferences > File Handling and uncheck the option to compress PSD and PSB files. This can speed up saving. Then go to Edit > Preferences > Performance. Try increasing the amount of RAM allocated to Photoshop, and make sure the "Use Graphics Processor" option is enabled.

  3. Clear Photoshop Cache: Go to Edit > Purge > All to clear the cache and free up memory.

  4. Check Scratch Disks: Go to Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks and ensure enough free space. You can also assign additional scratch disks if you need them.

  5. Reset Photoshop Preferences: Sometimes, a fresh start can help. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Cmd+Option+Shift (Mac) while launching Photoshop, and confirm you want to reset your preferences.

  6. Optimize File Handling: Save files to a local drive instead of a network drive. Avoid using too many artboards in a single document, as they can slow things down.

  7. Perform System Maintenance: Run Disk Cleanup (Windows) or CleanMyMac (Mac) to remove unnecessary files and free up space. If you're using a traditional hard drive (HDD), consider defragmenting it. (Not needed for SSDs.) Make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date. Visit the manufacturer’s website to download the latest version.

If you continue to experience these issues, we can keep looking into other possible issues. I hope this helps improve your performance! ^CH
