(CB 10031962) Photoshop Crashing When Using Adjustment Curves

Photoshop is constantly crashing when I adjust an adjustment curve. This problem has got much worse to the point where I can no longer use adjustment layers!

I'm using Apple Mac Book Pro M1 Max

I have done a clean Photoshop install and replaced my preference file.

I am on the latest Mac os Sequoia 15.1 (24B83)

I am on the latest Photoshop 26.0

I have nothing else running and still, it crashes.

Any ideas?

Please share the system information from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Go to the location of the preference folder mentioned below and rename it to back up. (https://adobe.ly/3u7u84j)macOS: Hold down the Option key in the Finder when using the Go menu. The library will appear below the current user's home directory.

Library > Preferences > Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2025 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2025.old)

This will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a new installation.

Hi,

I'm having the same issue, I also know three other retouchers all with the same issue. Two of us are on M1 max and the other two are on M3. For us, it always occurs when we use a curves adjustment layer. Photoshop just disappears. I've sumbited so many reports. This issue has been plaguing us for months now and is making everyday work quite unpleasant. We rely on curves adjustment layer for our work and this bug is deeply frustrating. Please someone address this issue.

I am also having this problem, it was present on my M2 Max and is also present on a brand new photoshop install on my M4 Max. Photoshop and Mac OS are both up to date. I submit a crash report every time it happens. Crash log attached here.

The problem seems to have stopped for now. I make sure I have very little open on my Mac and that there is plenty of scratch disc space. I also make a point of saving the file before going anywhere near adjustment curves. It's not ideal, but it seems to have worked for now. Every time it has happened (50 at least) I have completed the report that pops up.

That's strange as I have submitted countless reports?? Your link to more information has a 404 error.

I had already done the fresh new installation of photoshop to no avail! The only thing that seems to work is limitting what I have open on my MAC, ensuring I have lots of scratch disk space and saving my file before touching adjustment curves.

Since you’ve already done a clean install and reset preferences, I’d recommend checking your GPU settings in Photoshop and try turning off Use Graphics Processor in the preferences. Sometimes the M1 Max’s GPU can cause issues with Photoshop.

Also, it might be worth testing in Safe Mode to rule out any background processes causing conflicts. If that doesn’t work, maybe rolling back to an earlier version of Photoshop could help? Hope this gets sorted soon!"

If I open an image, create a new empty layer on it. Do some healing on the empty layer, then create a Curves Adjustment Layer, the moment I grab a point on the curves, Photoshop crashes.

I'm using 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro, and Photoshop 26.1.0 but it happened to me before on older versions as well.

It happened to me at least 5-6 times. There was a time when I worked a lot on a photo and then the Curves layer crushed Photoshop and I was never been able to recover the work I did.

Sometimes I can recreate the problem to test it, sometimes I'm not but I was able to recreate 3 times in a row.

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?
Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

Aside from that:

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

I didn't restore anything yet. I guess I need the graphics processor for certain things to run smoothly, so I didn't turn that off.

As I said, it does not do it every single time, but it does it like maybe 1-2 out of 10 times? So I can not be sure if I change anything, if that actually solves the problem, because sometimes I can replicate the issue, sometimes I can't.

Trouble-shooting includes determining whether certain components are involved in a malfunction.

If one doesn’t check whether the GPU or GPU driver is involved (in this case by disabling GPU usage) one cannot rule it out, no matter whether it ultimately is or not.
