(CB 10031962) Photoshop Crashing When Using Adjustment Curves

Community Beginner ,

Photoshop is constantly crashing when I adjust an adjustment curve. This problem has got much worse to the point where I can no longer use adjustment layers!

I'm using Apple Mac Book Pro M1 Max

I have done a clean Photoshop install and replaced my preference file.

I am on the latest Mac os Sequoia 15.1 (24B83)

I am on the latest Photoshop 26.0

I have nothing else running and still, it crashes.

Any ideas?

Thanks, on it. If you can work around using Curves adjustments in a layer group with a mask for now, then things shouldn't go sideways.

We think the issue is deep in our compositing code which we don't often touch, which would explain why it's been around for a long time. Evidently the patch from last December didn't entirely address every situation, so taking a look now.

I've also just had another crash on the latest Photoshop. I've tried everything suggested and nothing seems to fix this bug

I've been submitting reports whenever this happens to me too. It's driving me mad how often this happens.

It hasn't happened since I created space on my hard drive, so I'm assuming this solves the issue??

I don't think so, I have plenty of space, 350gb and the crash happens.

Agreed, I have 1.3TB free and get this crash on average 2-3 times a day. Often the crash does not even prompt the photoshop crash report dialogue to appear which makes submitting one impossible

I'm hoping to narrow down any commonalities in our setups as it seems the 4 of us are experiencing this bug so frequently.  Are any of you using mulitple external monitors or a Caldigit TS-4 Dock?

Does this affect all images or is there some unifying factor (Color Mode, Bit Depth, Filesize, …)?

I also mostly work in 8-bit, Adobe98. I definitely see the crash more often on larger document sizes, I'm almost always working on documents above 20k pixels on either dimension. That being said, it's not a guarantee that file size will initiate the bug. I have a 12GB, 40,000-pixel-wide .psb open at the moment and I've been working on it for hours without a single crash.

I also only ever see the crash when touching a point on a curve.

Hardware I'm using:

- 2 External monitors via a CalDigit dock. (BenQ SW321C)

- 3 External thunderbolt drives

- Razer Tartarus Pro (via USB Overdrive) for Photoshop Macros

- Wacom Intuos Pro, Large

I usually edit 8bit jpgs in PS, 24megapixel.

I attach an Apple Studio Display 5K to my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro directly, I don't use any dongle.

I also use Wacom Intuos Pro(2015 version).

I haven't worked on a psb for a couple of weeks, so I'm wondering whether this is a factor?

@barrycraig @Gabor Lenart @ninjaretoucher & @Benjamin299849658jvy Thanks for your patience and active contributions on this. We're actively investigating this.

In the meantime, go to Photoshop > Performance > (GPU) Advanced Settings > Uncheck 'GPU Compositing' & restart Photoshop & let me know if that helps.

Thanks!

Just revisiting this. I haven't had the crash since disabling GPU compositing so that is definately the short term fix. I do think that performance is generally worse with GPU Compositing disabled though so I'm looking forward to a proper fix.

I've been having exactly the same problem as described regulalry for probably a year. I've tried updating my operating system and photoshop to various versions, none of which have fixed the issue. I don't think its hardware related as I use various monitor, wacom, mouse and dock solutions and it still happens.

The vast majority of the time im saving as a PSB, is this a common with everybody else having the problem?

Extremly annoying issue especially when working on large files that take a long time to save.

We released a fix for this last December, but are seeing a few newish crashes trickling in as of March 2025; asking here if anyone who has been affecterd by this is still seeing the issue with the current release (26.4.1)?

Thanks Mark,

Yes, I thought the issue had been fixed until I had a couple of crashes lately. Always when using curves adjustment layers. I found making a save before using curves works.

Thanks

@ninjaretoucher ,

Can you confirm whether you are using a layer group with a mask, then the curves adjustment layer is within that group? Trying to narrow down our focus to just this or something more, if you are seeing it outside a layer group. Thanks for the quick response!
