ExtendScript app.open() reports "Error: Expected a reference to an existing File/Folder" on macOS

I am continually twarted by the latest CEP changes in Photoshop.  

Today I found that when I call ExtendScript's app.open() method in Photoshop v23.x, it throws an exception with the message:  "Error: Expected a reference to an existing File/Folder".  

The file in question does, in fact, exist. Furthermore, I find that this exception is thrown for any file I attempt to open using ExtendScript, regardless of the directory in which it resides.  And yes, I tried files on my desktop and in the Download folders as well.

The same code works as expected on Windows.  This fact leads me to believe that perhaps macOS Monterey sandbox rules are coming into play here, but I am attempting to access the very files that my extension placed on the disk in the first place.   For that reason, I expected sandbox rules to permit reading them back.

Following up on this issue, I have run the following experiments regarding performing an ExtendScript app.open() from CEP.

Configuration / Results:

   1. macOS 12.2 / Apple Silicon / Photoshop v22.5.5 running under Rosetta 2 – app.open() FAILS as reported above.

   2. macOS 10.14.6 / Intel / Photoshop v22.5.5 – app.open() WORKS as expected.

   3. Windows 10 / Intel / Photoshop v22.5.5 – app.open() WORKS as expected.

From what I am seeing, the problem must be Photoshop's interaction with either macOS 12.2 (Monterey), Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon, or all of them combined.  

If CEP were supported directly on Apple Silicon, we could rule out Rosetta 2, but unfortunately, that is not currently an option.

Some more experimentation shows that ExtendScript's $.evalFile() call also fails with the same error. This implies that ExtendScript is unable to access files on the local disk even though CEP's Node.js "fs" module can do so.

Is this all machines in category (1) 12.2 + M1 + Rosetta, or a few or only one? What happens when you try to write and then read a text file to the Desktop? And if only one machine then what does this look like?

I've gone even one better.  In desperation to find a word-around, weeks ago I even gave Photoshop Full Disk Access as shown:

For clarity, I wanted to explicitly state that even giving Photoshop full disk access did not resolve the issue at hand - the "Expected a reference to an existing File/Folder" persists.

Well that should solve disk access problems. Is this one, a few, or all machines? The write and read test ascii only text file works? Can you send me Photoshop System Information?

This was not a problem with macOS 12.0 - macOS 12.1 in combination with Photoshop v22.5.x.  The problem was first identified with macOS 12.2 / Photoshop v23.x, however, it is also now present with macOS 12.2 / Photoshop v22.5.3 - v22.5.5.

Earlier macOS versions work (macOS 10.14 and macOS 10.15 specifically - macOS 11 was not tested).

The write and read test ascii only text file works?

The problem is easily reproducible by attempting to use ExtendScript to open (read) any file – whether that is a PSD file on my drive or even when attempting to load an additional JSX ExtendScript file via the "$.evalFile()" call.

When using the "fs" module via CEP's Node.js integration, I can read/write to files just fine.

Any progress on this? I'm exeriencign the same issue on MacOs 12.4 with Photoshop 23.2.1 on a Macbook Pro with Intel i9 processor

I was able work around the problem of loading JSX files by adding an ANT build step (to my build process) that combines all of my JSX files into one large one. That large one has to be the one that is specified in the extension's manifest.
